DECLARATION:
Ephesians 2:20–22 (ESV)
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Our church family is built by God, upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone.
We are joined together by union with Christ, we are growing, we are a dwelling place of God by his Spirit, and we are missionaries.

INTRODUCTION:
Review:
wk. 3 - The H.S.’s role in this limited OT scope prompted Joel to prophesy around 825 BC that the Christian messianic age would be distinctly different in that God will pour out [His] Spirit on all people
WHY?…
TODAY: The Promise Fulfilled!
Opening Scripture:
The promise…
Luke 24:49 “49 And behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you. But stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.””
Acts 1:8 “8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.””
Fulfilled: Acts 2:1-13, 14-36

1. The gift of the indwelling Spirit (vv. 1–4)

Filling “with”…Acts 2:4 “4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Manifestations (v. 2 sound of wind , v. 3 saw flames, v. 4 spoke glossa)
Baptism…Acts 1:5 “5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.””

2. The response of the unbelieving world (vv. 5–13)

Bewilderment (vv. 5–12)
Acts 2:12 “12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?””
Belittlement (v. 13)
Acts 2:13 “13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.””

3. The Church’s reply to the unbelieving world

a. The Scriptures promised it (vv. 14-21, 24-28)

Acts 2:16 “16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:”

b. The foundation is the resurrection of Jesus (vv. 22-23)

Acts 2:22 “22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—”
Acts 2:24 “24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.”

c. You should embrace it (vv. 33–36)

Acts 2:33 “33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.”
Transition: A new era has come with the Spirit being poured out upon ALL (i.e., to the ends of the earth)…
Conclusion/Reflection:
Luke started his Gospel in the Temple and ends it in the Temple…and yet in Acts where is the promise of the Holy Spirit fulfilled?…outside the temple near their dwelling!
Their traditions, their customs, their culture, their style was upended by the Spirit coming outside the temple!
Do you expect God to only move according to traditions, customs, culture, style, etc.?
Let us expect God to show up in power wherever we dwell and where He guides us!
Talk It Over
What was the response of the crowd to the initial outpouring of the Holy Spirit?
How can the church today act as a dwelling place for God by the Spirit?
In what ways can we recognize the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in our personal lives?
