INTRO:
1 Corinthians 12:12 NLT
12 The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.
ILL. chain many links or parts but it’s one chain
1 Corinthians 12:9–10 NLT
9 The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. 10 He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said.
Sometimes it’s hard to even decipher which gift is in operation. They all compliment one another
Fear dispels the gifts from functioning
I. THE GIFT OF FAITH
A. Explanation.
What does great faith do? (removes fear, gives us the courage to ACT,)
ILLUSTRATION:
A little kid that can’t swim being willing to jump into the pool knowing their parent will catch them.
Derek Prince defines the Gift of Faith as, “A mustard seed of God’s own faith sovereignly imparted and supernaturally. We don’t claim it, God gives it to us.
ILLUSTRATION:
Apple Tree vs Christmas Tree (apple tree takes years before it bears fruit, Faith or Faithfulness as a Fruit of the Spirit takes time to develop in a Christians life; Christmas tree overshadows gifts that appear the night before Christmas and disappear as soon as the gift is recieved by the children.)
B. Biblical Examples:
1. Supernatural power
The Fig Tree
Mark 11:12–14 NIV
12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
Mark 11:20–22 UBS5
“Have faith in God” english
“Have the faith of God” greek
The things you do and the things you say will be as effective as if God Himself is doing it or God Himself is saying it. It wasn’t His faith it was God’s faith.
God’s faith in me enabled me to determine the destiny of that tree.
God spoke the earth into existence
Mark 11:23–24 NIV
23 “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
Very inclusive language, Anyone says, Will have whatever he says.
You can’t do that out of your own desire or decision…it is the gift of God’s faith imparted for that situation.
Elijah and the Prophets of Baal
Elijah had experienced a great victory over the prophets of Baal and killed them all with the sword only to find himself, in the next moment, running scared from Queen Jezebel who threatened to kill him. (1 Kings 18-19.)
2. Personal protection
Daniel 6:16–24 NLT
16 So at last the king gave orders for Daniel to be arrested and thrown into the den of lions. The king said to him, “May your God, whom you serve so faithfully, rescue you.” 17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den. The king sealed the stone with his own royal seal and the seals of his nobles, so that no one could rescue Daniel. 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night fasting. He refused his usual entertainment and couldn’t sleep at all that night. 19 Very early the next morning, the king got up and hurried out to the lions’ den. 20 When he got there, he called out in anguish, “Daniel, servant of the living God! Was your God, whom you serve so faithfully, able to rescue you from the lions?” 21 Daniel answered, “Long live the king! 22 My God sent his angel to shut the lions’ mouths so that they would not hurt me, for I have been found innocent in his sight. And I have not wronged you, Your Majesty.” 23 The king was overjoyed and ordered that Daniel be lifted from the den. Not a scratch was found on him, for he had trusted in his God. 24 Then the king gave orders to arrest the men who had maliciously accused Daniel. He had them thrown into the lions’ den, along with their wives and children. The lions leaped on them and tore them apart before they even hit the floor of the den.
Hebrews 11:33 NLT
33 By faith these people overthrew kingdoms, ruled with justice, and received what God had promised them. They shut the mouths of lions,
3. Personal provision during a famine—1 Kings 17; 19:4–8.
4. Accepting God’s promises—Genesis 21:5; Romans 4:20.
ILLUSTRATION:
Mass on my foot that God said he would heal me from.
II. THE WORKING OF MIRACLES
A. Explanation. A miracle is a supernatural intervention in the ordinary course of nature. A miracle takes place against natural laws.
B. Biblical Examples:
1. The miracles in Egypt—Exodus 7–10.
2. Dividing the Red Sea—Exodus 14:16, 21–22.
3. Miracles of the manna and the water—Exodus 16–17.
4. Feeding the 5,000—Matthew 14:15–21.
5. Blinding Elymas—Acts 13:6–11.
6. Transporting Philip—Acts 8:38–39.
III. THE GIFTS OF HEALING
A. Explanation. These gifts are for the supernatural healing of diseases and infirmities without natural means.
B. Biblical Examples:
1. Laying on of hands
Mark 16:18 NLT
18 They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.”
Mark 16:20 NLT
20 And the disciples went everywhere and preached, and the Lord worked through them, confirming what they said by many miraculous signs.
2. Anointing oil and elders
James 5:13–15 NLT
13 Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises. 14 Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.
ILLUSTRATION:
Running a fever while in college, I went to Pastor Chris he laid hands on me and I was immediately healed, the fever broke and I began to sweat.
3. Handkerchiefs and aprons
Acts 19:12 NLT
12 When handkerchiefs or aprons that had merely touched his skin were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases, and evil spirits were expelled.
4. Peter’s shadow
Acts 5:12–16 NLT
12 The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers were meeting regularly at the Temple in the area known as Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 But no one else dared to join them, even though all the people had high regard for them. 14 Yet more and more people believed and were brought to the Lord—crowds of both men and women. 15 As a result of the apostles’ work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter’s shadow might fall across some of them as he went by. 16 Crowds came from the villages around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those possessed by evil spirits, and they were all healed.
