Today we are in our 10th sermon in our series called a Prophet and 2 Kings.
Today we are covering what I would say is the most well known story in the Old Testament.
It is a story that loved by many.
A story that even people with no church background will know.
It is a story that you will here in reference in sports, politics, and business.
I am sure you already guest the story by now but it is the story of David and Goliath.
Before we read our text this morning I want to ask you the question.
Are you winning battle’s in the secret place?
The secret place with either propel you for your next God given assignment
or
rob you from you next God given assignment.
Our text this morning is in 1 Samuel 17.
Give you a background what has just transpired....
David anointed to be the King
Transition between Saul and David (Spirit)
chapter 17:1-11
Israelite and Philistines…
Goliath the giant over 9 feet tall… Armor custom built for his size…
1 Samuel 17:8–11 (ESV)
8 He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. 9 If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” 10 And the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together.” 11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.
(Isreal is terrifiedFear is contagiousSaul bad leadershipSpirit is not with him…)
Authors moves to David…
David is back in Bethlehem with his father because his father is advanced in years.
V15 “David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.
David has things in order in Bethlehem,
so His father Jesse sends him back to Saul with the instruction to bring his 3 oldest brothers who are encamped with Saul’s army supplies along with supplies for the commander of his brothers regiment. (17:17-18)
We pick up the text in verse 20....
1 Samuel 17:20–26 ESV
20 And David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the encampment as the host was going out to the battle line, shouting the war cry. 21 And Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army. 22 And David left the things in charge of the keeper of the baggage and ran to the ranks and went and greeted his brothers. 23 As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him. 24 All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were much afraid. 25 And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. And the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house free in Israel.” 26 And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”
Example… organizations that are failing will bring people in from the outside…
Good thing about coming in from the outside.... not ingrained into the same thinking…
Israel had it ingrained into them to fear Goliath.
Whereas,
David is not ingrained with that type of thinking so he see’s Goliath and his immediate reaction is who is this pagan that he should defy God’s army.
It is important to also remember David has the Spirit of God empowering him too.
2 Timothy 1:7 NKJV
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
David has a supernatural boldness because the Spirit of the Lord is empowering him with supernatural power to walk in boldness.
But one thing I have learned is that not everyone who see’s the Spirit working in our lives will except it as the work of the Lord.
This is what happens after David speaks boldly..
1 Samuel 17:28 (ESV)
28 Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men. And Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”
2 things that can happen when someone is jealous of someone else.
The first thing is they will try and tear down the person they are jealous of...
Eliab said, “And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness?” (tearing him down)
The second thing is they will misinterpret the actions of the person they are jealous of...
Eliab said, “I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle” (Misinterpreting his actions)
Remember who God said he wanted to be the next King?
Samuel said to Saul…
1 Samuel 13:14a (ESV)
14 But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people.”
When Samuel thought Eliab should be the next king....
1 Samuel 16:7 ESV
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
Eliab was jealous so he misinterpreted his brothers heart and said it was evil.
Which of course was not true because God choose David because of his heart.
But think we could learn from how David handle’s his brother’s criticism...
1 Samuel 17:29–31 ESV
29 And David said, “What have I done now? Was it not but a word?” 30 And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke in the same way, and the people answered him again as before. 31 When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul, and he sent for him.
Example… Everyone has critics… what are you going to do about it?
The problem is so many people get tied up with the critics that they can’t move on and they lose there opportunity
When David was criticized by his brother,
he immediately turned to the next person to say the same thing…
And because he did not get tied up with his brothers criticism and justify why his heart is right...
the king sent for him…
David was anointed to be King because God was looking for a man after His own heart.
David’s brothers watch this happen,
but we fast forward to the battle field
While David is there,
Goliath comes out and begins to taunt the army of Israel.
And David hears this… Who is this pagan, that he should defy the armies of the living God?
Eliab the oldest brother responds to David saying…
“Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”
1 Samuel 16:12–13 (ESV)
12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
