Introduction
Greetings…
As we continue looking at our recent series on, “The Home As God Would Have It” we find ourselves having last week examined “Masculinity In The Home” today focusing on “Femininity In The Home.”
The bible is full of women who demonstrated what a godly woman looks like.
Ruth, Esther, Tabatha, Mary…
As we dive into this lesson today, I want to point something out.
The characteristics of femininity for the wife and mother are not typically limited to these roles.
The same expectations that are found there apply to a godly woman for the most part, but from a slightly different perspective.
A wife that is feminine, as God would have her be, is submissive to her husband, but a woman that is not married must still be submissive to men and God most importantly (1 Corinthians 11:3).
A godly woman’s femininity in the home is one of the most beautiful things in this world.
10 An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.
22 He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord.
14 House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the Lord.
A godly wife’s femininity in the home is found, as God points out through Peter, in her adornment.
1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct. 3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—
4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. 5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.
A godly wife’s femininity adorns her by way of…
Her Submission
Her Submission
The Feminazi Movement.
The Feminazi Movement.
There has never been a point in history wherein the submission of wives to their husbands has not had its naysayers, outside of the beginning of creation.
The “feminist” ideology has been promoted by Satan, contrary to popular belief, pervasively in almost every culture in some form or fashion.
In ancient Rome, around the 3rd century BC, a group of women barricaded the Forum in an attempt to force consul Marcus Porcius Cato to repeal laws that limited women’s use of expensive goods.
Christine de Pisan, who lived from 1364 to 1430, is accredited with being the “first notable feminist thinker.”
My point is the idea of “removing the shackles of the oppression of submission to men” has been a long time plea of feminist or women seeking sin and is not new.
This why God spends as much time as he does discussing submission.
Because the home is broken if a wife does not understand what it means to be…
Under Her Husband’s Authority.
Under Her Husband’s Authority.
Now let’s read again 1 Peter 3:1 and 1 Peter 3:5-6.
1 Peter 3:1 (ESV)
1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives
1 Peter 3:5–6 (ESV)
5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.
The problem today with women, and what they have seen in their own homes far too often growing up, is a misguided attempt at submission or an all out rejection of it.
This is of course not limited to the world homes, but is often found even in Christian homes today.
The word submission comes from the Greek word that literally means to “throw under” or “put under.”
3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.
22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord.
The idea here is not that her husband has his “thumb on his wife” so to speak, but that she is “under” his authority.
Now, why is this the case.
First, because it is a command of God.
18 Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
Second, because God created man first.
11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve;
Third, because Eve was deceived not Adam.
14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor.
What does femininity in the home look like wherein submission is found in the wife?
A biblically feminine wife yields to her husband’s decisions and follows his lead.
This isn’t blindly however, as into sin, this is following him into heaven.
Summary
Summary
A wife’s submission to her husband is not a bad thing but a beautiful thing in the sight of the Lord.
A godly wife demonstrates her femininity when she submits her husband’s leadership in the Lord.
We also find God, through Peter, describing femininity in the home by describing…
Her Respect & Pure Conduct
Her Respect & Pure Conduct
Respect.
Respect.
Notice Peter writes…
1 Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct.
A wife respecting her husband is vital to a biblical marriage.
We have too many husbands and wives in the church wherein the wives have no actual respect for their husbands.
I have seen this countless times where wives completely ignore their husbands advice and do “whatever they want instead.”
What does a wife respecting her husband look like?
She obey’s his voice as said before, when it does not conflict with her being faithful to God as this allows God’s word not to be reviled.
5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.
She does not put her husband to shame, but honors him in such a way that he has complete trust in her.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.
23 Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land.
4 An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones.
If these two things are accomplished there is no greater respect a wife can demonstrate toward her husband.
Respect is only the first part however, we also will find in a wife’s femininity her…
Pure Conduct.
Pure Conduct.
A wife who demonstrates pure conduct is vital to a biblical marriage.
A wife’s pure conduct is seen by others in how she presents herself to those outside the home.
1 Peter 3:3 (ESV)
3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear
This is seen practically in that her clothing is not immodest meaning it does not seek to draw unbiblical attention to herself.
22 She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple.
A feminine wife dresses, outside the home, in such a way as to demonstrate respect for God and her husband.
She is dressed neither in vanity nor careless.
Now a wife’s pure conduct with her husband has additions that are not found in women who are not married.
Only wives are to demonstrate purity by way of their sexual relationship with their husbands.
Wives are to keep their marriage bed undefiled.
4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
Wives are to keep their marriage bed undefiled by making sure their sexual relationship is not missing in action.
1 Corinthians 7:3–5 (ESV)
3 The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4 For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

We also find God, through Peter, describing femininity in the home by describing…
Her Gentle & Quiet Spirit
Her Gentle & Quiet Spirit
Gentle Spirit.
Gentle Spirit.
Peter writes…
4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.
I think Titus 3:2 best describes what a gentile spirit looks like in submission, obedience, and good works.
2 to speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people.
Speak evil to no one.
26 If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless.
Avoid quarreling.
9 But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless.
Show perfect courtesy towards all people.
As one person said it, “courtesy transcends mere politeness, becoming the invisible thread that weaves respect, empathy, and consideration into the fabric of communication.”
In other words, showing courtesy is speaking to someone in a respectful, empathetic, and considering way.
The femininity of a wife is also found in her…
Quiet Spirit.
Quiet Spirit.
The value of quietness is found throughout the scriptures.
6 Better is a handful of quietness than two hands full of toil and a striving after wind.
11 and to aspire to live quietly, and to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we instructed you,
The idea here is that of not causing a ruckus in the home.
Wives are naturally passive i.e., submissive, but a wife out of pocket leads to chaos.
4 An excellent wife is the crown of her husband, but she who brings shame is like rottenness in his bones.
Tranquility of the heart is essential for demonstrating femininity in godly wives.
30 A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.

Invitation
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
33 So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
