Know the Spirit’s Job

A Helper

John 14:16 NKJV
16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—
Holy Spirit is describe as a helper,
Greek writers, used of a legal advisor, pleader, proxy, or advocate, one who comes forward in behalf of and as the representative of another.
Christ designates the Holy Spirit as Paraclete (John 14:16), and calls Him állos (243), another, which means another of equal quality and not héteros (2087), another of a different quality. Therefore, the Holy Spirit is designated by Jesus Christ as equal with Himself, i.e., God (1 John 2:1). Zodhiates, Spiros. The Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament, Electronic ed., AMG Publishers, 2000.

Learn and Remember

John 14:26 NKJV
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
This new Paraclete, the Holy Spirit, was to witness concerning Jesus Christ (John 14:26; 16:7, 14) and to glorify Him. The Holy Spirit is called a Paraclete because He undertakes Christ’s office in the world while Christ is not in the world as the God–Man in bodily form. In addition, the Holy Spirit is also called the Paraclete because He acts as Christ’s substitute on earth.
Teach you all things
Bring to Your memory what Christ said and taught ‘
Romans 8:26 NKJV
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Convicting Others

John 16:7–8 NKJV
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
When the HOLY Spirit comes
He will convict the world of sin
convict the world of righteousness
convict the world of judgment

Guiding in Living the Word

John 16:13–14 NKJV
13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.

Your Job is to Surrender

Ephesians 5:17–18 NKJV
17 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,

FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

To live separated in our walk and sanctified in our talk, we must be filled with the Spirit.)
(1) The alternative to being filled with the Spirit (5:18)—If we are not filled with the Spirit, we will be filled with wine or with other things (intoxicants) which are of the world. We have a choice as to whether we are to be filled with the things around us or with the things above us.
Paul adds that being filled with wine leads to excess (debauchery, dissoluteness, utter ruin (Prov. 20:1; 23:29–35).
(2) The necessity of being filled with the Spirit—We can’t walk in wisdom unless we are filled with the Holy Spirit, for we have no wisdom apart from that which He gives.

SUMBIT TO THE SPIRIT’S CONTROL

Mark 1:12 NKJV
12 Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness.
Matthew 4:1 NKJV
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Luke 4:1 NKJV
1 Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

(3) The need for constancy in being filled with the Spirit (5:18)—The durative tense of the verb is used: “Be being filled with the Spirit” The filling of the Spirit must be constantly maintained. Yesterday’s filling will not meet today’s needs.
(4) The means of being filled with the Spirit (5:18)—The active and the passive voices are involved. We surrender, God fills.
(5) The meaning of being filled with the Spirit—It does not mean that we get all of the Spirit but that He gets all of us. When we are fully yielded to the Spirit and He fills us, then He is president and not only resident in our lives.
(6) The results of being filled with the Spirit (5:19–21)

OUTWARD EXPRESSION OF INWARD JOY

Ephesians 5:19 NKJV
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
A paraphrase translation of verse 19—“Giving utterance for yourselves by means of singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing and playing [upon musical instruments] with your heart to the Lord.”
WHEN we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we are filled with joy, which joy at times finds outward expression in singing and playing from the heart praises to God.
REMEMBER
Romans 12:1 NKJV
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.
WHAT WE DO MUST BE acceptable to God, our religious singing and playing must be not a show of the flesh but an overflow of a joyful and thankful heart.
A normal Christian life is a joyful life, a joyful life lived in the midst of life’s sorrows.

CONSTANTLY GIVE THANKS

Ephesians 5:20 NKJV
20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,
1 Thessalonians 5:18 NKJV
18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
We will constantly give thanks unto God for all things (5:20)—“Giving thanks always for all things...in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
If we are filled with the Spirit, we will always thank God for all things (Rom. 8:28), our thanksgiving being acceptable because it is offered through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 8:28 NKJV
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

SUBMIT TO ONE ANOTHER

Ephesians 5:21 NKJV
21 submitting to one another in the fear of God.
We will habitually submit ourselves to each other (5:21)—“Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God”
When we are filled with the spirit, we will not work independently of our brothers but will work in fellowship with them, submitting ourselves to our brothers’ teachings, exhortations, admonitions, reproofs, rebukes, etc.
We will not be loners or free-lancers
We will be subject to one another in the fear of God.
