5th commanment

Notes
Transcript

Remember the commandments were sort of broken into 2 groups by Jesus
The first 4 can be summed up
Matthew 22:37 NASB95
37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
What are the first 4 commandments?
Have no other Gods before me
Have no idols
Do not take the Lords name in vain
Keep the Sabbath and keep it holy
Remember the 10 commandments
The first 4 deal with your relationship with God
This is the first importance
If our relationship with God is good then that allows the relationship with other people good
But if your relationship with God is not good don’t expect your relationship with other people to be good
That is why the first 4 commandments are first
So this brings us to commandment number 5
Jesus gives us a 2nd commandment as He sums up the remaining 6 commands
Matthew 22:39 NASB95
39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
This commandment deals with your relationship with other people
It sums up the remaining 6 commands
So today we talk about the 5th commandment
What is the 5th commandment?
Exodus 20:12 NASB95
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
Honer your Father and Your Mother
The only commandment that comes with a promise attached to it
That if you honor your mother and father you may live a long life
If you don’t honor your mother and father you may not
Seems pretty simple
How do you honor your parents?
To Honor them is to show esteem for them through our conduct
With this particular command there is a bunch of interesting things that are going on
First you are to honor your father and your mother
Which means you are to do what they tell you to do
Why is that difficult to do?
How you act reflects on your parents
And you want to show them respect by your actions when around people and you want to show your parents respect when you are by yourself
It does reflect your parents
Same is true when you do something not so smart
It reflects on them
You are to obey them
Even when you think you know better
Because lets be honest there are times we thought we knew better
There are times that we thought our parents didn’t know what in the world they were talking about
It doesn’t matter you are called to obey them
And lets be clear
For those who are not obeying their parents you are breaking the law
It is not a mistake
It is not opps I’m sorry
Church it is breaking the law
Church when you are disobeying it is called sin
And you need to repent and then begin to obey your parents
When they say something or give you direction you need to follow it
Second
We see the protection of the family
God has put the family unit together and there is a pecking order
Kids you are not in charge
Parents they are not in charge
That is how God has designed the home to operate
The Father is the head of the home
The leader and the mother is to help the leader lead the home
Kids you are to be obedient to your parents directions
The others are understood if you break the law there is punishment
But this particular promise is for if you fulfill the command there is a promise tied to it
Ephesians 6:1–4 NASB95
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), 3 so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth. 4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
The promise is that if you fulfill that law you will live and long and prosperous life
The Teacher’s Commentary 12: Ex. 20–24—The Ten Commandments

Respect of parents leads to knowing God.

When you read the commandments they seem so very very simple don’t they?
Why do we struggle so much with them.
So you have homework for tonight
If you have in the past week disobeyed your parents
I want to challenge you to spend time in prayer with God and repent of disobeying your parents
Then I would challenge you to go and tell your parents you are sorry you disobeyed them
Then don’t do it again
