Our Acceptance of God’s Advocate (1-2)

John was writing to combat the idea of a division between spiritual and physical.
God’s grace is not an excuse to sin.
When we do sin, we have an Advocate, Jesus Christ the Righteous.
Jesus is His given earthly name and affirms His humanity.
Christ (Anointed One) affirms His deity.
He is the Righteous One – He is able to make intercession for us.
Jesus Christ is the Propitiation for our Sins.
Only the Righteous God-Man could atone for our sin.
Make sure that you know Christ and are known by Him.

Our Attention to God’s Word (3-6)

“How do we know that we have come to know God?” by living in the light.
Our Love for Christ is evidenced by obeying His commands.
John 14:15–17 NASB95
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments. “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
A changed heart is the promise of the New Covenant.
Jeremiah 31:33 NASB95
“But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
Our love for Christ is evidenced by receiving God’s Word.
The Parable of the Sower – Matthew 13:18-23
The receptiveness of the soil reveals the condition of our heart.
Abiding in Christ results in walking as He walked.
John 15:10 NASB95
“If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.
Jesus sought always to do the will of the Father.
We are to seek to do His will.

Our Agape toward the Brethren (7-11)

A changed heart results in love for the brethren.
It is an old commandment because it is the essence of the law and prophets.
Matthew 22:36-40, love God and love your neighbor
It is a new commandment, because Christ gave it again to His disciples - John 15:12
Hatred for others reveals the darkness of our own heart.
