I. The Day Of Worship. vs.1-7
I. The Day Of Worship. vs.1-7
They were at a special meeting. vs.1-3
1 Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.
“the first day of the week”
Occurs 8 times in the Bible.
8 = New beginnings
Matthew 28:1; Mark 16:2, 9; here; John 20:1, 19.
Acts 20:7 “And upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, ready to depart on the morrow; and continued his speech until midnight.”
1 Corinthians 16:2 “Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.”
2 And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. (Matthew 28:1-4)
3 And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. (Mark 16:9)
They were around special messengers. v.4
4 And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:
They were hearing a special message. vs.5-7
5 And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?
6 He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,
7 Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.
3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
II. The Day Of Words. vs.8-12
II. The Day Of Words. vs.8-12
They remembered His words. v.8
8 And they remembered his words,
Romans 10:15 “And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!”
Romans 10:14 “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?”
Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Psalm 119:50 “This is my comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me.”
James 1:18 “Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.”
Luke 16:29 “Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.”
They returned with His words. vs.9-10
9 And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.
“the eleven”
Luke 24:33 “And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,”
Acts 1:26 “And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.”
Acts 2:14 “But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:”
10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.
These were not women preachers. (1 Timothy 2:12; 3:1-2)
They were what every Christian is: a person that is a witness that Jesus is alive from the dead!
They rejected His words. vs.11-12
11 And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.
“they believed them not”
Genesis 45:26 “And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob’s heart fainted, for he believed them not.”
12 Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.
Peter had to go see.
What did he see?
An empty tomb.
Grave clothes.
