Introduction
Oh that you would rend the heavens and come down,
that the mountains might quake at your presence—
as when fire kindles brushwood
and the fire causes water to boil—
to make your name known to your adversaries,
and that the nations might tremble at your presence!
When you did awesome things that we did not look for,
you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence.
From of old no one has heard
or perceived by the ear,
no eye has seen a God besides you,
who acts for those who wait for him.
You meet him who joyfully works righteousness,
those who remember you in your ways.
Behold, you were angry, and we sinned;
in our sins we have been a long time, and shall we be saved?
We have all become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous deeds are like a polluted garment.
We all fade like a leaf,
and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.
There is no one who calls upon your name,
who rouses himself to take hold of you;
for you have hidden your face from us,
and have made us melt in the hand of our iniquities.
Our Passage this evening, Isaiah 64:1-7, is a passage that has stuck with me since the very first time I read it. As I began to grow spiritually throughout my life, there has always been one thing, biblically speaking, that has continued to grow. As I have studied God’s Word, read books from great theologians, sat under preaching from great men of God, I have come to realize more and more, Who God is and just who exactly I am. This teaching, this Doctrine, is what I believe to be the fountain head of what we call reformed theology.
GOD
Everything Flows from the Doctrine of God and the Doctrine of Man. EXPOUND
God’s Holiness (Isaiah 6:1-7) Isaiah’s vision in the Temple
God’s Power and Glory (Job 38-42) God’s Response to Job
MAN
Isaiah 64:6-7 READ
as it is written:
“None is righteous, no, not one;
no one understands;
no one seeks for God.
All have turned aside; together they have become worthless;
no one does good,
not even one.”
EXPOUND
Application and results of knowing who we are and who God is: EXPOUND ON EACH POINT
-The way we pray
-The way we worship
-The way we view our sin against Him
Produces a Gospel centered healthy fear of the Lord.
-This should force someone to depend more on God, to run to the cross.
Lastly, FOCUS ON THE GOSPEL
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Your salvation cost a perfect lamb his blood.
The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
Prayer
