Deuteronomy 10:12–11:7 ESV
“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good? Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it. Yet the Lord set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day. Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn. For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe. He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt. You shall fear the Lord your God. You shall serve him and hold fast to him, and by his name you shall swear. He is your praise. He is your God, who has done for you these great and terrifying things that your eyes have seen. Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven. “You shall therefore love the Lord your God and keep his charge, his statutes, his rules, and his commandments always. And consider today (since I am not speaking to your children who have not known or seen it), consider the discipline of the Lord your God, his greatness, his mighty hand and his outstretched arm, his signs and his deeds that he did in Egypt to Pharaoh the king of Egypt and to all his land, and what he did to the army of Egypt, to their horses and to their chariots, how he made the water of the Red Sea flow over them as they pursued after you, and how the Lord has destroyed them to this day, and what he did to you in the wilderness, until you came to this place, and what he did to Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, son of Reuben, how the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households, their tents, and every living thing that followed them, in the midst of all Israel. For your eyes have seen all the great work of the Lord that he did.

Sermon

Not just a matter of obedience in crossing the Jordon in obedience to God
A life of loving service to God

A Fivefold Requirement

Deuteronomy 10:12–13 ESV
“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to keep the commandments and statutes of the Lord, which I am commanding you today for your good?
These 5 points will be repeated and eleborated in the chapters ahead...
1) Fear God
Proverbs 1:7 ESV
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Awe, respect and reverence that arises from considering the greatness, majesty, holiness and goodness of God
We rightly fear to offend such a God of holiness, who has shown us so richly His love
He is our God:
We have the revelation He has made of Himself
We are in covenant with Him
We know Him, Respect Him and Honour Him
Return...
2) Walk in His ways
Follow His example
Examples:
v17 - The Awesome God who is not partial and takes no bribe
v18 - He executes justive for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner giving him food and clothing
3) Love Him
God first loved us - He set his love on us
We are to set out love on Him
4) Serve God with all your heart and soul
This is the inner attitude
Service is therefore not forced or a burden
It is free, joyful and fulfilling
Love serves, not as a servant serves, but as a lover serves
5) Keep the commandments and statutes (service & worship)
God’s commands are given for our good
Wisdom & Instruction - fools despise
Wise and suited to our needs
To help and Guide us in our living
Life is better when we do what God says

A Multiform Incentive

Deuteronomy 10:14–16 ESV
Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it. Yet the Lord set his heart in love on your fathers and chose their offspring after them, you above all peoples, as you are this day. Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no longer stubborn.
God created the Universe, and all of it belongs and is answerable to Him
Yet the Lord set His heart in love on you
Amazing truth of Election
Cirmcumcision was the outward symbol of God’s covenant with Abraham
God calls His People to circumcise their heart, and no longer stubborn
They are unworthy & unlovely
Yet God chose them
“you above all peoples” - imagine/fancy choosing people like you
God has shown his wounderous Grace towards Israel
What a debt of love and glad service they owe to Him who has been so good to them
Deuteronomy 10:17–19 ESV
For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe. He executes justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the sojourner, giving him food and clothing. Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.
What a statement of Praise! towards God
Not partial and takes no bribe
Does not show favouritism and cannot be bribed
His people must be the same!
Acts justly for the fatherless and the widow
Loves the foreigner who comes to take refudge in the land, and provides food and clothing for them
Deuteronomy 10:20 ESV
You shall fear the Lord your God. You shall serve him and hold fast to him, and by his name you shall swear.
Fear God
Serve Him and hold fast to Him
By his name you shall swear
Leviticus 19:12 ESV
You shall not swear by my name falsely, and so profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.
you are God’s ambassador
everything you do is in His name
every promise you make is in His Name, so take promises seriously
Deuteronomy 10:21–11:1 ESV
He is your praise. He is your God, who has done for you these great and terrifying things that your eyes have seen. Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons, and now the Lord your God has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven. “You shall therefore love the Lord your God and keep his charge, his statutes, his rules, and his commandments always.
What an Incentive !
What a Warning !
What an instruction !

A Necessary Consideration

Deuteronomy 11:2–7 ESV
Numbers 14:29 confirms a census was taken of all those twenty and above, not allowed to enter the promised land
Moses speaks to those who had been 5 - 19 years old at the time
Moses reminds them of God’s greatness, might hand and outstretched arm
His sign and His Deeds
Consider instruction of the LORD means to learn the lessons taught by the past
