Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Last Week: We are not on our own.
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
What am I supposed to do in the face of pain?
How do I do the right thing when it hurts?
“For the end of all our actions is to be free from pain and fear.” - Epicurus
Epicureans believed the goal of life was to escape pain.
“Pain is neither unbearable nor unending, as long as you keep in mind its limits and don't magnify them in your imagination.” - Marcus Aurelius
Stoics believed that you have the power to overcome pain by willpower and intellect.
Acts 17:18 ESV
Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also conversed with him. And some said, “What does this babbler wish to say?” Others said, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign divinities”—because he was preaching Jesus and the resurrection.
The Christian message is an alternative to every other answer to pain.
Hebrews 5:7 ESV
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
Jesus - like every one of us - wanted to escape pain.
Hebrews 5:7 ESV
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
Jesus’ response to pain was prayer. He did not look inward. He looked upward.
Hebrews 5:7 ESV
In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
Jesus knew that God had the power to save him from pain.
Hebrews 5:8 ESV
Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered.
Jesus did not believe the only option for pain was to avoid it.
Hebrews 5:1–3 ESV
For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people.
The priests of old did not know the answer to suffering. They had not learned it.
We don’t learn obedience to endure pain. We endure pain to learn obedience.
Hebrews 5:9 ESV
And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
The experience of human pain makes you more, not less.
James 1:2–4 ESV
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Don’t waste your pain.
Hebrews 5:9 ESV
And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,
The strength to endure does not come from within or from an idea. It comes from Jesus.
