The day of the Lord is coming when He will return to judge the wicked and will spare those who have turned to Him with all their hearts. An outward show of religious zeal or humility will not suffice, as God is able to discern true repentance from that which is insincere and fleeting. What is the condition of your heart today?
The overriding theme of the Book of Joel is the Day of the Lord.
A day of God’s wrath and judgment.
This is the Day in which God reveals His attributes of wrath, power, and holiness, and it is a terrifying day to His enemies.
In the first chapter, the Day of the Lord is experienced historically by the plague of locusts upon the land.
Chapter 2:1-17 is a transitional chapter in which Joel uses the metaphor of the locust plague and drought to renew a call to repentance.
Chapters 2:18-3:21 describes the Day of the Lord in end of the world terms and answers the call to repentance with
prophecies of physical restoration (2:21-27),
spiritual restoration (2:28-32), and
national restoration (3:1-21).
Theme of Joel...
God’s people are Called to repent in the face of the coming day of Yahweh.
Joel 2:12–13 (NLT)
12 That is why the Lord says, “Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. 13 Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.” Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.
Chapter 3
More Judgment
why?
Joel 3:3 (NLT)
3 They threw dice to decide which of my people would be their slaves.
They traded boys to obtain prostitutes and sold girls for enough wine to get drunk.
I will bring them back… (1980’s)
7 “But I will bring them back from all the places to which you sold them, and I will pay you back for everything you have done.
Multitudes,
הֲמוֹנִ֣ים (hă·mō·w·nîm)
Noun - masculine plural
Strong's 1995: A noise, tumult, crowd, disquietude, wealth
14 Thousands upon thousands are waiting in the valley of decision.
There the day of the Lord will soon arrive.
TO HUM...
"with our ' hum; ' then noise, and, among others, the hum of a multitude, then a multitude even apart from that noise. It is used of the throng of a large army."
CLOSING THOUGHTS ON Joel...
Without repentance, judgment will be harsh, thorough, and certain. Our trust should not be in our possessions but in the Lord our God.
God is there to draw us closer to Him even...
when nature comes crashing down,
when sorrow floods over our hearts, or
when other common occurrences surprise us or make us feel crushed.
Know that in His mercy and grace, He has provided the definitive plan for our salvation—
Jesus Christ, crucified for our sins and exchanging our sin for His perfect righteousness
21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.
There is no time to lose. God’s judgment will come swiftly, as a thief in the night according to
2 For you know quite well that the day of the Lord’s return will come unexpectedly, like a thief in the night.
we must be ready.
Today is the day of salvation according to
2 Corinthians 6:2 (NLT)
2 For God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation.
Isaiah 55:6–7 (NLT)
6 Seek the Lord while you can find him. Call on him now while he is near.
7 Let the wicked change their ways and banish the very thought of doing wrong. Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy on them. Yes, turn to our God, for he will forgive generously.
Only by appropriating God’s salvation can we escape His wrath on the Day of the Lord.
