Devotion: The Heart of a Servant Leader

Scripture: Mark 10:42-45 (ESV) "And Jesus called them to him and said to them, 'You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.'”
Reflection: Jesus redefines greatness for His disciples. In a world where leadership is often about power and authority, Jesus models something radically different—servant leadership. He doesn’t just talk about it; He embodies it, ultimately laying down His life for others.
As church staff, we are called to follow this example. Our role is not to elevate ourselves or seek recognition but to serve others with humility and love. This can be especially challenging in ministry, where the demands are high and the pressures are constant. But Jesus' example reminds us that true leadership is about putting others' needs first, whether that’s in the form of encouraging a volunteer, helping a church member in need, or working alongside our fellow staff with grace and patience.
This passage challenges us to ask ourselves: How can we serve more like Jesus?
In what ways can we humbly serve those in our ministries? Are we focusing on lifting others up, even when it requires sacrifice? How are we reflecting Christ’s love and humility to those we lead?
As we prepare to discuss the various areas of ministry today, let’s keep the heart of a servant leader at the center of our decisions, interactions, and plans.
