Saving Grace and the Redeemed Man

Sin and the Fall has left mankind in a hopeless state.

The effects of sin were rampant.

Rom 5:12 illustrates that sin and death entered through one man, and because all men continued to sin due to their sinful nature, they all experience death.

This leads us into our passage for the night.

Titus 2:11-14

V.11a

As promised in Gen. 3 and reiterated to many times in the Scripture, God’s grace has been revealed in Christ.

God despite our sinfulness has shown His great love and come to our rescue.

This grace has brought with it four changes in our relationship with sin.

V.11b- The Penalty of Sin

Christ has come and redeemed us from the penalty that our sin has procured.

God being the righteous judge He is could not passively ignore our sin, thus there had to be a payment.

Isaiah 53:6–11 ESV

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.

Highlight V. 6- Sheep astray, V. 10- Will of God to crush Him, V.11- Servant make many accounted righteous

So the lamb has taken our penalty, and we are righteous in the eyes of God.

Salvation doesn’t stop there though.

V. 12- The Power of Sin

With salvation begins our sanctification

V.12a- Deny ungoldliness

Repentance is a key sign of a changed heart.

When we are saved we are granted a new heart and begin to hate the old sin.

We are to be continually examining and trying to put it to death.

V.12b- Put on Godliness

Becoming like Jesus isn’t just about saying no, but it is also about pursuing a life that honors Him for there is true joy and freedom.

So set free from the power of sin we are no longer slaves and able to pursue God.

This is true for the rest of our life until Christ comes back, which leads to our next change.

13- The Presence of Sin

When we are with Christ we will be glorified, meaning no more struggle with sin.

This will happen wither in death or at His return where all sin will cease.

We can have this hope because of our final change.

14- Possession by Sin

Prior to our conversion we are called children of evil and wrath.

In saving us we are adopted in as God’s children, restored to relationship with our maker.

See the purpose of Jesus’s coming:

To redeem us

To purify for Himself

You are no longer your own, but you belong to Christ.

This is not an overbearing slave driver, but a loving master whom we can follow and know true fulfillment and joy.

He made us, and even though we like sheep have gone astray He has purchased us. Now we may serve Him and fulfill our duty to represent Him to the world as He continues to grow His Kingdom.
