Context

Jesus is about to head to Jerusalem for Passover where He is going to be crucified
Jesus’ followers believe that when He gets to Jerusalem this is when His kingship will happen
Just like we saw in the Easter Series in the Jesus’ entry into the city
Luke 19:11 “As they heard these things, he proceeded to tell a parable, because he was near to Jerusalem, and because they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately.”
Jesus tells this parable to help His followers understand what is about to take place
The Parable
The Parable
Luke 19:12–27 He said therefore, “A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas, and said to them, ‘Engage in business until I come.’ But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ When he returned, having received the kingdom, he ordered these servants to whom he had given the money to be called to him, that he might know what they had gained by doing business. The first came before him, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made ten minas more.’ And he said to him, ‘Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.’ And the second came, saying, ‘Lord, your mina has made five minas.’ And he said to him, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’ Then another came, saying, ‘Lord, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a handkerchief; for I was afraid of you, because you are a severe man. You take what you did not deposit, and reap what you did not sow.’ He said to him, ‘I will condemn you with your own words, you wicked servant! You knew that I was a severe man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow? Why then did you not put my money in the bank, and at my coming I might have collected it with interest?’ And he said to those who stood by, ‘Take the mina from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ And they said to him, ‘Lord, he has ten minas!’ ‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. But as for these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slaughter them before me.’ ””

Parable’s Meaning
Jesus is the King
“went in to a far country” = represents the time in heaven before His return
Gives all his followers 1 minas
Mina is the Gospel
the gospels has been give to each follower who is to spread/share it until Jesus returns
Make it grow
The king’s return is Judgement Day
When all will stand before God and be judged accordingly
For their sins or faithfulness
2 Faithful Servants are True Followers
Those who have been changed by the gospel and live for it everyday
They are faithful to use the opportunities God’s gives them to share the gospel
They use the time God blesses them with on earth to do his work not theirs
Rewarded for their faithfulness
1 Unfaithful Servant are Proclaiming Followers
Someone who pledges allegiance to Jesus but doesn’t actually live for Him
Out of fear of God they decide nothing is better than failing
Not rewarded but punished
Jews are those who reject Jesus the king
people who have chosen to reject Jesus as King
Identified as his enemy
Experience death —> eternal death in Hell
That is a lot to take in… so what is the main point of the parable that we need to know?
Bottom Line: Christians will be judged by their faithfulness
Bottom Line: Christians will be judged by their faithfulness
Let Me Add
This does not mean we are saved by our works
This is teaching that if we have been changed by the gospel we are expected to live for the gospel
To be faithful to our King until He returns
But what does being faithful until Jesus returns look like? The good news is that this parable teaches how faithfulness works.
Application
Application
Faithfulness
Begins with a right view of God
Faithful Servatns
Healthy fear of the king
served him
knew he would reward them
Unfaithful Servant
Unhealthy fear of the king
Scared of punishment so did nothing
Fear of failing paralyzed him
Same is true of God
we should have a healthy fear of Him
Proverbs 9:10 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.”
A healthy fear of God view of is the foundation of wisdom and faithful living
Psalm 145:8–9 “The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.”
The more we understand God and His character the more faithful we will become
Just like the faithful servants
Continues through God’s power in us
“Your mina has made”
the faithful servants understood that their faithfulness was a result not of their works but of the moneys work through them
This is true of Christians true
Our faithfulness is a result of the power of the HS working in and through us
John 15:5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
Jesus tells his disciples that their works and faithfulness is only possible through Him working in them
Philippians 2:13 “for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”
Paul says its God working in us to fulfill His will
God calls us to be faithful but doesn’t leave us to do it alone.
He gives us power through the HS to be faithful even when it is hard
Ends with a Reward
The faithful servants are given cities
Jesus is going to reward us according to our faithfulness
Matthew 25:21 “His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’”
Jesus says in another parable that is very similar that he will reward us with the words “well done, good and faithful servant.’
He will also set us over much or reward us much
2 Timothy 4:7–8 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”
Paul says that the reward is the crown of righteousness
Bottom Line: Christians will be judged by their faithfulness
