One of the most important steps to SPEAKing the truth in love comes from Matthew 7:1-5, Galatians 6:1-4, 1 Corinthians 10:12. What do we need to do before SPEAKing to a brother? Why is this important? How does doing this help us to keep the Focus on God’s Comfort and Confrontation? How does this effect my attitude in going, and when I am ‘attacked’ for confronting?

The goal of our encouragement is to see one another keeping in close relationship with our Lord and Savior, and growing to maturity in Him. (Colossians 1:28) For this to happen, we need to be faithful to one another, to comfort and to confront. Read Romans 2:4. What leads us to repentance? If that is the case, how should that enter into both Comfort and Confrontation? Read Hebrews 12:5-6. How is Confrontation a ‘kindness’ from God?

Read Ephesians in one sitting. Look for the Comfort and Confrontation. Jot down and brief list of the comforts, and the confrontations. Does Paul start with Comfort or Confrontation? Why do you think he does that? Do you find Comfort and Confrontation completely separate from one another, or are they somewhat interspersed? Was the Comfort vertically oriented, or horizontal? (Did Paul keep the focus on God as the source of comfort?) Was the Confrontation Vertical or Horizontal? (Did Paul confront them with God’s call, or with his own personal agenda?) What can you learn from Paul’s example?

Read 1 Peter in one sitting. Look for the Comfort, and the Confrontation. Jot down and brief list of the comforts, and the confrontations. Does Peter start with Comfort or Confrontation? Why do you think he does that? Do you find Comfort and Confrontation separately, or interspersed? Was the Comfort vertically oriented, or horizontal? (Did Peter keep the focus on God as the source of comfort?) Was the Confrontation Vertical or Horizontal? What can you learn from this example?
