SOBER :Characterized by self-control, seriousness, and sound moral judgment

ADVERSARY:Heb. satan), an opponent or foe ( 1 Kings 5:4 ; 1 Kings 11:14 1 Kings 11:23 1 Kings 11:25 ; Luke 13:17 ); one that speaks against another, a complainant ( Matthew 5:25 ; Luke 12:58 ); an enemy ( Luke 18:3 ), and specially the devil ( 1 Peter 5:8 ).

DEVOUR:Our enemy the devil desires to devour us, to cause real and lasting harm. The Greek word here is katapiein, literally meaning to "swallow," or to "drown." Peter has made it clear that our place in eternity with our Father is secure. The devil cannot take that from us, but he does seek to damage our faith.

RESIT:to stand against the devil's attacks and refuse to give in to his advances.

Draw near to God: Live in a right relationship with God by submitting to him, drawing near to him, and humbling yourself before him.

Stand in faith: The devil's goal is to intimidate God's people and scare them off from discipleship and witness.

Wield the Word: The Word of God protects us from Satan's lies. Jesus overcame the devil by quoting the Scriptures.

Take sin seriously: Grieve over sin and weep over it before God.

Be discerning: Distinguish truth from error and be willing to defend the truth and expose error.

Be led by the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit empowers us to overcome spiritual attacks and temptation.

Be sober-minded and alert: The devil disguises himself as an angel of light and tempts us with things that appear good.
