John 16:5–24 ESV
5 But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 16 “A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
What does our passage say about God, Jesus, or The Holy Spirit?
First the Father. Look at verse 15 and 23
John 16:15 ESV
All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
John 16:23 ESV
In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.
What does it say about Jesus?
John 16:7 ESV
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
The main focus in our passage this morning is the Holy Spirit. Look at verses 8-11
John 16:8 ESV
And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
Let us look at each one of these individually. Starting with verse 9
John 16:9 ESV
concerning sin, because they do not believe in me;
This truth revolutionized by view of evangelism. Think about the term witnessing. What is a witness? It is not your job to convince other people through human wisdom to believe and trust me I tried and it never worked.
John 16:10 ESV
concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;
I really like how my friend Cory translated this verse.
“And when that person comes, he will state the damning facts about the world as to failure, as to ts’dhaká, and as to judgment—first, as to failure, because they aren’t putting their trust in me; second, as to ts’dhaká, because I’m going on to the Father and you aren’t observing me anymore; third, as to judgment, because the top figure of this world has been judged.” Backstory: A Translation of the New Testament Cory Hartman
John 16:11 ESV
concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.
Matthew 8:29 ESV
And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”
Mark 1:24 ESV
“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”
Mark 5:7 ESV
And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”
Acts 16:17 ESV
She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.”
What does it say about us? Look at verses 5 & 6
John 16:5 ESV
But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’
John 16:6 ESV
But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
We are often stuck on how things affect us and if we aren’t careful miss the larger point.
What else does it say about people?
John 16:20 ESV
Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
What else? Verses 17-19
John 16:17 ESV
So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?”
John 16:18 ESV
So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.”
John 16:19 ESV
Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’?
They were afraid to approach Jesus and ask Him what He meant. What was holding them back? Pride
Are you afraid to be open to Jesus?
Richard Lorenzo Jr. testimony asking the Higher Power to reveal Himself to him.
What hope do we have?
John 16:13 ESV
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
John 16:14 ESV
He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
John 16:15 ESV
All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.
What other hope do we have?
John 16:21 ESV
When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.
John 16:22 ESV
So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
Do you have this Joy? When you truly encounter Jesus He will give you a Joy that cannot be taken from you.
And finally
John 16:23 ESV
In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you.
John 16:24 ESV
Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
