Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus

How come some people get healed and other people don’t?

What is it versus one persons prayer that gets what they want while another person gets no relief?

These answers only God knows. A person could ask with faith and still not get what they want. And this is what Jesus asks us today in the gospel, "Bartimaeus get up."

“What do you want me to do for you?”

“I want to see,” he said.

And so whenever Christ gives the healing, he also works the spiritual healing first. So what does the blindman do? he already recognizes Jesus as the son of David, but then with his sight he follows Jesus, which is the thing that even those who could see didn’t want to do. What a wonderful example for all of us.

What do you want? Maybe you would say money or a new car or a new home or a job or a child or … a better prayer life?

I asked a kid last week and eighth grader, what are you guys want? This kid responded back to me…cash. Yeah buddy, don’t we all!

What if we took a look inside ourselves and wanted something that would help us achieve heaven and then we asked for that as if that was our only concern.

Christ will always give us what we need for salvation, and sometimes he accompanies that with physical healings and manifold graces .

“I must now turn to a great loss that befell our family when my mother became ill. There were voices and comings and goings all over the house. Our whole existence changed into something alien and menacing, as the house became full of strange smells and midnight noises.

... I remembered what I'd been taught — that prayers offered in faith would be granted. I set myself to produce by will power a firm belief that my prayers for her recovery would be successful.

It didn’t work.

He later adds,

“With my mother's death all settled happiness, all that was tranquil and reliable, disappeared from my life. And there has never been really any sense of security and snuggness since. I've not quite succeeded in growing up on that point. There is still too much of mommy's lost, little boy about me. My father's good qualities as well as his weaknesses incapacitated him for the task of bringing up two noisy and mischievous schoolboys”. Just like CS Lewis couldn’t see what God was doing in his life in his totality so too we want to run away from the pain that our suffering cause us, especially death.

Why didn’t my faith and my prayer save my mother? Why didn’t my prayer make my father a better father? Why didn’t my prayer in my faith save my wife from cancer?

We don’t get to see the effects of our prayers in the world. I was talking with another gal couple days ago, and she was telling me about her daughter who is the young teenager and they found a tumor in her abdomen. That was scary enough and so everybody started praying for her , the parents were scared, but they kept praying, the doctors went in and removed the cancer, cancer that normally spreads and this one didn’t. And yet they had to remove an ovary when they took out the cancer. So it’s good news bad news, right? God be praised, Bartimaeus jumped up, springing up, left his cloak on the ground and said “teacher I want to see.” Just like the disciples he left what he owned and followed Christ. Isn’t that what all of us should want?! to follow Jesus on the way?! And Jesus doesn’t say that we won’t have suffering, that we won’t experience death, that we will have perfect health and enough money, NO!, he says that he would be there with us.

Think of the Rich Young Man a couple of weeks ago. He couldn’t follow… why would I dare ask for more stuff?!?! Stuff that will just impede my journey!

You ask but do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions James 4:3

The real difficulty is—isn’t it—to adapt one’s steady belief about tribulation to this particular tribulation; for the particular, when it arrives, always seems so peculiarly intolerable. Cs Lewis https://www.cslewisinstitute.org/resources/c-s-lewis-on-grief/

No one ever told me that grief felt so like fear.

And I think this is the problem with our different adversities in this life, is that we get afraid and we know that we are limited and we start to fear what will happen next. I’m already blind. What’s next? I can barely manage this. How will I manage whatever is the next thing that comes? I think this is why the disciples say to Bartimaeus “Cheer up! get up!”

And so CS Lewis became a great Christian, a great apologist, arguing for the faith, and a great intellectual when it comes to “the problem of pain,” perhaps that’s one of the reasons why God let him go through so much suffering, because God could see what he was going do with him. But even so, there are still hidden reasons, and it isn’t always so practical, but it’s very practical for getting to heaven and being healed!

And so I say to you today, cheer up, get up because Jesus is calling you not to be rich or successful, but to be healed, to see, and to follow. But the more you try and be master of your own own universe, the determinator of your own satisfaction , the more blind you will be.

¿Por qué algunas personas se reciban la sanación y otras no?

¿Qué es lo que hace que una persona para obtener lo que desea mientras que otra no obtiene alivio?

Estas respuestas sólo las sabe Dios. Una persona puede pedir con fe y aun así no obtener lo que quiere. Y esto es lo que Jesús nos pide hoy en el evangelio: “Levántate Bartimeo”.

“¿Qué quieres que te haga?”

“Quiero ver”, le dijo.

Y entonces, cada vez que Cristo da la curación, también obra primero la curación espiritual. Entonces, ¿qué hace el ciego? Ya reconoce a Jesús como el hijo de David, pero luego con su vista siguió a Jesús, que es lo que los que pudieron ver no querían hacer.

Qué maravilloso ejemplo para todos nosotros. Gritar, Gritar otra vez, sobrevencer los que quieren prevenir. Oir con los buenos oidos. Saltar. Dejar. Acercarse. Pedir. Recibir. Seguir!

¿Qué quieres? Tal vez dirías dinero o un auto nuevo o una casa nueva o un trabajo o un hijo/a o… ¿una mejor vida de oración?!

La semana pasada le pregunté a unos niños de octavo grado: ¿qué es lo que quieren? Este niño me respondió: effectivo! Sí, amigo, ¡todos queremos lo mismo?!

¿Qué pasaría si miráramos dentro de nosotros y quisiéramos algo que nos ayudara a alcanzar el cielo y luego lo pidiéramos como si esa fuera nuestra única preocupación?!

Cristo siempre nos dará lo que necesitamos para la salvación, y a veces lo acompaña con curaciones físicas y gracias visibles.

“Ahora debo referirme a una gran pérdida que sufrió nuestra familia cuando mi madre enfermó. Había voces y idas y venidas por toda la casa. Toda nuestra existencia se convirtió en algo extraño y amenazador…

... Recordé lo que me habían enseñado: que las oraciones ofrecidas con fe serían concedidas. Me propuse producir, mediante la fuerza de voluntad, una creencia firme de que mis oraciones por su recuperación tendrían éxito.

No funcionó.

Más adelante añade:

“Con la muerte de mi madre, toda la felicidad establecida, todo lo que era tranquilo y fiable, desapareció de mi vida. Y nunca he tenido realmente una sensación de seguridad y comodidad desde entonces. No he logrado crecer en ese aspecto. Todavía hay demasiado del niño perdido de mamá en mí. Las buenas cualidades de mi padre, así como sus debilidades, lo incapacitaron para la tarea de criar a dos niños ruidosos y traviesos”. (Lewis, Sorprendido por la alegría)

Se convertió de un Cristiano entre un ateo por mucha de su vida adoloscente y joven adulto.

Así como CS Lewis no podía ver lo que Dios estaba haciendo en su vida en su totalidad, también nosotros queremos huir del dolor que nos causa el sufrimiento, especialmente la muerte, y tenemos la tentación de pensar en Dios que juzgamos con la culpabilidad de la tragedia.

¿Por qué mi fe y mi oración no salvaron a mi madre? ¿Por qué mi oración no hizo de mi padre un mejor padre? ¿Por qué mi oración en mi fe no salvó a mi esposa del cáncer?

Preguntas que imagino de CS Lewis pidió.

No podemos ver los efectos de nuestras oraciones en el mundo. Hace unos días estuve hablando con otra mujer y me contaba sobre su hija, que es una adolescente joven y le encontraron un tumor en su seno. Eso fue bastante aturdidos y todos comenzaron a orar por ella. Los médicos entraron y le quitaron el cáncer, un cáncer que normalmente se propaga y este no lo hizo. Y sin embargo, tuvieron que quitarle un ovario cuando le quitaron el tumor. Así que son buenas noticias y malas noticias, ¿verdad? Alabado sea Dios!

Bartimeo se levantó de un salto, se puso de pie, dejó su manto en el suelo y dijo: “Maestro, quiero ver”. Al igual que los discípulos, dejó lo que tenía y siguió a Cristo.

¿No es eso lo que todos deberíamos querer? ¡Seguir a Jesús en el camino! Y Jesús no dice que no tendremos sufrimiento, que no experimentaremos la muerte, que tendremos una salud perfecta y suficiente dinero, ¡NO!, dice que estaría allí con nosotros.

Piense en el joven rico de hace un par de semanas. No podía seguirlo…

¿¡por qué me atrevería a pedir más cosas!? ¡Cosas que solo obstaculizarán mi camino!

si se lo piden, no lo reciben porque lo piden mal, pues lo quieren para gastarlo en sus placeres.  ¡Oh gente infiel! ¿No saben ustedes que ser amigos del mundo es ser enemigos de Dios? (Santiago 4,3-4)

La verdadera dificultad es (¿no es así?) adaptar la creencia firme de uno sobre la tribulación a ésta tribulación en particular; porque la particular, cuando llega, siempre parece tan peculiarmente intolerable. Cs Lewis https://www.cslewisinstitute.org/resources/c-s-lewis-on-grief/

Nadie me dijo nunca que el dolor se parecía tanto al miedo.

Este es el problema con las diferentes adversidades que tenemos en esta vida, que nos da miedo y sabemos que estamos limitados y empezamos a temer lo que sucederá después. Ya estoy ciego. ¿Qué sigue? Apenas puedo manejar esto. ¿Cómo voy a manejar lo que sea que venga después?

Los discípulos le dicen a Bartimeo: “¡Ánimo! ¡Levántate!”

Y así CS Lewis se convirtió en un gran cristiano, un gran apologista, defensor de la fe, y un gran intelectual en lo que se refiere al “Problema del dolor”, tal vez esa sea una de las razones por las que Dios le permitió pasar por tanto sufrimiento, porque Dios podía ver lo que iba a hacer con él. Pero aún así, todavía hay razones ocultadas, y no siempre es tan práctico, pero es muy práctico para llegar al cielo y ser sanado!

Y por eso te digo hoy, ánimo, levántate porque Jesús te está llamando no a ser rico o exitoso, sino a ser sanado, a ver, y a seguir. Pero cuanto más trates de ser dueño de tu propio universo, el determinante de tu propia satisfacción, más ciego serás.
