[Announce text] Please look with me in Scripture at 1 Peter 5:12-14.
[Scripture introduction] In the fifth chapter of Peter’s first letter, the Apostles writes to the dispersed exiles who are scattered among the Near-Eastern world and at the closing of the letter; Peter issues his final greetings to the exiled churches.
[Reannounce and read text] Please turn with me to the closing of Peter’s first letter in 1 Peter 5:12-14.
[Prayer for illumination] Heavenly Father, Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. In Christ’s name we pray. Amen.
[Introduction] The conclusion of a story, article, or letter is as important as the beginning. It sums up the entire purpose.
Our exile isn’t resolved. It’s extended throughout the final greetings of Peter’s letter. We are not home yet.
[FCF] What shall we do while we remain in spiritual exile?
[Scripture bond] Peter in his final greetings clarifies what we are do in the meantime.
[Main point 1] Faithful exiles, stand firm in the true grace of God.
[Explanation] God’s true grace helps us to live a life of holiness, suffering, submission, and service.
[Illustration] Plant your feet on solid foundation of God’s truth. It’s cannot move, and we must remember it.
[Application] Be firm in doctrine. Stand on the foundation of Christ our cornerstone.
[Main Point 2] Faithful exiles, persevere in Babylon with your brothers and sisters' love.
[Explanation] Babylon is full of bitterness and distrust. But not in the church. We love one another.
[Illustration] Look around, and greet someone with your modern kiss of love. Meet someone new, and learn their name, and eventually their story. These leads to friendships.
[Application] Show affection to those in Christ’s church. Mercy, grace, patience, and kindness.
[Main Point 3] Faithful exiles, experience the peace of Christ and rejoice in it.
[Explanation] Union in Christ informs the church that can obtain peace even when we are physically not in the presence of God.
[Illustration] It nots the emptiness of chaos that brings peace, but God with us. When the disciple were found lock inside a house. Christ appeared and declared, “Peace be with you.”
[Application] We need to recover the peace of Christ and bask in it full radiance. Invite God’s presence into your situation and let him be your shalom.
[Conclusion] What shall we do while we remain spiritual exiles? Stand firm, love one another in Babylon, and rejoice in Christ’s peace.
For we know this to be truth.
[Proposition] Faithful exiles, your almost home.
Now continue living for him until your journey is finished. Amen.
