Chapter 1 through Chapter 2 verse 4 we have a quick summary of how God created everything and on what days he created everything. Chapter 2 takes us back into the middle of creation and God fills in the details of how and when He created man as well as giving us some details of why he created man.
Genesis 2:5–6 KJV 1900
5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. 6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.
When God first created the earth, there was no rain. In fact up until Noah’s day (several generations past Adam and Eve) there was never rain. God watered the fields by allowing moisture to raise up out of the ground.
Genesis 2:7–8 KJV 1900
7 And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. 8 And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed.
God formed Adam breathed into him life then planted the most beautiful garden and put Adam in it.
Genesis 2:9 KJV 1900
9 And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
This Garden had every type of fruit tree you could think of! This place was perfect and had anything Adam could ever want!
Genesis 2:10–15 KJV 1900
10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. 11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. 13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. 14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river is Euphrates. 15 And the Lord God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

We are given the location of where the Garden of Eden was. The first two rivers mentioned have since dried up and we are not 100% sure where they were. The second two (Tigris and Euphrates) are still there although over the last 6,000 years the locations may be a little different from where they are now.
God Makes Adam and puts him in the Garden of Eden and here we have the first job mankind was ever given, to tend the garden. God had his beautiful and perfect new creation and He chose to create man to share this grand place with and for him to maintain the land.
Genesis 2:16–17 KJV 1900
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
God gave Adam the most beautiful place to live. A place that had everything he could ever want or need. Then God put one regulation on Adam. There is one tree you can’t eat; nobody knows what that fruit was or what it looked like but God told them if you eat of this fruit it will open your eyes to know evil. Before this time Adam had no clue what evil was. God was not trying to keep something good and tasty from Adam. God was trying to protect Adam. The same goes for all the other rules that came after this one was broken God does not say “Do not lust after someone” because He wants us to keep us from something good, he tells us that to protect us from something bad!
Genesis 2:18 KJV 1900
18 And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
Think of this, God did not say I will make him a helper to be his slave, He said Adams’s helper was to be comparable or equal to him. Yes, the husband and wife have different roles to fulfil but one is not greater than the other.
Its also important to note that God designed Adam to be joined with Eve. A man to be joined to a woman. The intent is for a man to be completed by being joined to a woman. If a man joins a man or a woman joins a woman in this relationship, this goes against God’s design and it does not work.
If we try to live our lives in a different way than God designed it to be, we will never be able to fulfil our role of serving God and bringing Him glory with our life. by choosing to live a different way, we are telling God he made a mistake in the way He created us. What right does the creation have to tell the creator how things should be done?
God’s design is for the best possible outcome for us, not to try and take away our fun, its to show us that if we choose a different path, we will no longer be protected from the consequences of those sins.
Genesis 2:19–24 KJV 1900
19 And out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. 20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. 21 And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22 And the rib, which the Lord God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. 23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Verse 24 is very key to the family structure. God says when a man and wife get married. The wife does not join the mans parents and get grafted into that family. God’s intent was for the man to leave his father and mother and start a new family, on his own. When we leave Gods intended plan, problems start to come in. discontentment on the wife’s side or the husband many times neglects his wife and kids because he is too tied up with his old family. Sometimes the grandparents can try to assume authority over the husband that Biblically they do not have.
Genesis 2:25 KJV 1900
25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
They were not ashamed because they still did not know evil. There were no bad thoughts running though their minds. They were pure!
In Conclusion: Many times, our culture does not go in the same direction as God’s plan. Sometimes culture defines sin differently than God defines sin. Sometimes culture defines that family different than God defines family. When these conflicts arise, we are left with a choice. Follow culture or follow God. If we choose to follow culture, problems will come, if we choose to follow God, blessings and peace (even in hard times) come. Which plan are you following? When God’s word shows you a cultural issue, do you correct your living, or do you stick with culture?
