1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! 2 It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge of his garments. 3 It is like the dew of Hermon, Descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing— Life forevermore.
The word for unity here is translated in the New Living Translation as Harmony.
A harmony is not the same note…but it is a part of the family of consonant notes.
There are notes that don’t sound the same…but when put together they bring about a fuller picture of the chord.
It is good and pleasant for brethren to dwell together in unity.
__________
It is not God’s will for His church to be a church of unison.
The notes that I play are going to be different than the notes that you play.
The notes that an african-american plays are going to be different than the notes that a white person plays.
Blessing is not dependent upon uniformity…but it is promised when there is unity!
____________
We must understand that there is a difference between diversity and adversity.
There are some points of view and preferences that are simply different
There are other points of view and preferences that are in opposition to what scripture and our faith in Jesus are calling us to.
While we celebrate various expressions of living…a great travesty of the apostate church is condoning adverse points of view in the name of unity.
__________
Unity by it’s very nature requires a center point.
You unify around something.
The earth and all of the planets are all independent of one another but are orbiting around the sun.
As Christians our unity should be based on the fact that Yahweh is the one true God and His Word is the infallible Word of God.
When this is the basis of our unity it gives clarity to the ways that we manifest that unity in every other sphere of our lives.

Vocationally
Nationally
Politically
Recreationally
When we are willing to compromise the integrity of God’s Word and our calling as Christ followers for the sake of unity…it is clear that God’s Word and our faith in Christ is not the center-point around which we are unifying.
