King James Version (Chapter 6)
5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. 7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth me that I have made them. 8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God. 10 And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth. 13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. 15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits. 16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof; with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it. 17 And, behold, I, even I, do bring a flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; and every thing that is in the earth shall die.
Noah’s Ark received new interest this past week when it was announced that the warm temperatures was melting ice and snow on Mount Ararat and Satellite imagery had depicted something that looked like the shape of a large boat. The Ark, Noah’s family, and everything that goes with it are not just newsy but they are terribly important in the scheme of things concerning the last days and the return of the Lord Jesus Christ for His church. I do not believe the Genesis Flood nor the Ark of Noah to be mystical fairy tales nor made up legends that make for lively discussion. They are true because of the inspiration and authority of the Scriptures. It fits into everyday life of 2024 because people need to hear that these are the last days.
The scale model that you have before you is nowhere near the original Ark, but it is a close representation to a much smaller scale of what it looked like. The size was somewhere near 500-520 feet long, depending on what cubit measurement used. It was about the size of a modern container ship. It was about 90 feet wide and 45-50 feet tall. With three floors, of about 15 feet in height for each one. The type of wood was Gopher wood, which no one knows what that wood was. But we know it had to be durable and then it was coated with pitch. We assume it was a pine tar like substance for shedding of water and possibly it was like the material oakum that was used in the building of wooden boats to keep them water tight.
Noah was commissioned to build the Ark by God. Noah was a grandson of Enoch, who walked with God and He was the Father of the Oldest living man ever to have walked this earth- Methuselah (969 Years) Enoch was a preacher who had warned mankind about coming judgement. We read about his preaching in The book of Jude verses 14- 16
English Standard Version (Chapter 1)
14 It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16 These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage.
Enoch preached hard, and walked with God and was translated from this life. He did not die.
Why the Ark here this morning? Why the Ark in 2024?
1. Why Not?
1. Why Not?
It is a neglected Bible story: unless you are a devotee of the Answers in Genesis ministry. Many people stay away from it because they feel it may be controversial. Jesus spoke specifically about the need to pay attention to what Noah did:
English Standard Version (Chapter 24)
36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. 37 For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, 39 and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. 42 Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.
A similar passage is found in Luke 17:26 - 30.
2. It is in the Bible
2. It is in the Bible
Do not let anyone fool you on the veracity of the the book of Genesis and the the entirety of Scripture. It is God’s Word and we believe it by faith. After all modern day ship building follows the ratio’s for building water craft today. Where did they get their ideas? From the Bible.
The Book of Ezekiel names Noah with Daniel and Job as being souls delivered by righteousness. The Lord Jesus teaches Noah as truth and we should believe the accounts as true.
3. Commanded By God
3. Commanded By God
King James Version (Chapter 6)
14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood. Gen. 6:14
God spoke and Noah carried out the command. The building of this monster ship was over 100 years in the making. Noah then received a diving covenant from God for His building by faith and that He and his family entered the ark by faith.
4. The Ark Warned The World.
King James Version (Chapter 3)
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:
22 Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.
I Peter 3:18-22
5. Noah did this also for His Family
English Standard Version (Chapter 11)
7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Heb 11:7.
6. The Ark is a Warning for the Last days, and Reveals False Teachers.
6. The Ark is a Warning for the Last days, and Reveals False Teachers.
English Standard Version (Chapter 3)
3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires. 4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”
5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, 6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.
7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.
The False teachers are the scoffers/ or deriders. Also referred to as mockers and scorners.
Three things make up the character of the last days: Making fun of Creation, the flood and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.
King James Version (Chapter 2)
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. 3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not. 4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be vreserved unto judgment; 5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;
