1 John: To Know and To Show
Message #4
10/23/2024
1 John 2:3-11.
Central Idea: We can know that we know Jesus in a personal way through the markers in our lives that are evident of His presence.
Objectives:
Cognitive: I want the hearers to know they can have confidence in their salvation/relationship with God.
Affective: I want the hearers to feel assured in their relationship with Jesus.
Psycho-Motor: I want the hearers to examine their lives to determine if these marks are present in their lives— to affirm a relationship with Jesus.
Guiding Question:
What are the marks of knowing Him?
Keeping His commands. [vv. 3-6]
The person knowing God has a zealous desire to keep or follow His commands in obedience.
Loving other people. [vv. 7-11]
Not new—
Leviticus 19:18 “18 Do not take revenge or bear a grudge against members of your community, but love your neighbor as yourself; I am the Lord.”
Matthew 19:19 “19 honor your father and your mother; and love your neighbor as yourself.”
Mark 12:28–34 “28 One of the scribes approached. When he heard them debating and saw that Jesus answered them well, he asked him, “Which command is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is Listen, Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. 31 The second is, Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.” 32 Then the scribe said to him, “You are right, teacher. You have correctly said that he is one, and there is no one else except him. 33 And to love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself, is far more important than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 When Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to question him any longer.”
John 13:34 “34 “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another.”
New:
Bearing the quality of love that is evidenced in Christ— that which is already shining in Him.
Reflective Questions:
[1] Does a careful examination of your life prove that you bear the marks of one who knows God— living obediently to Him and loving others?
