Observations and Questions

Section by Section Exposition

Philippians 4:1-9
Context!
The unity of the church is in full sight now!
How does the context (think situations that are mentioned throughout the letter) inform the meaning of this passage?
Why would Paul tell them to rejoice? Why would he say “And do not have anxiety?”
What does the Lord is near mean? (both near in the sense of spatially and temporally).
What are verses 8-9 accomplish, what might that look like?
Philippians 4:10-23
Prison and confidence not being in the flesh is in mind here. The Lord is our provision. (This is why Paul says what he does. Because he is seeing his circumstances theologically).
Monetary gift.
What does verse 13 mean?
Our lives as a sacrifice to God. I.e. Paul is applying levitical language to the Christian life. This isn’t a metaphor or something like that, but Paul this is theology informing how Paul sees his situation.
Greet those of Caesar's household. Think about where Paul talks about our citizenship being.
