Text: Genesis 14:1-3
Intro: As we continue our study “Unto a Land” today we will consider Sodom and Gomorrah. If you remember last week we considered Hebron, “the city of refuge”: the place where Abraham purchased a field and the borders were made sure, how that field had a cave and how that place was made sure unto Abraham. It wasn’t his inheritance because he purchased it, and didn’t receive any of the land for an inheritance.
Genesis 13 - Separation of Abraham and Lot
Genesis 13:3 KJV 1900
And he went on his journeys from the south even to Beth-el, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Beth-el and Hai;
vs. 7 - Strife
vs. 9 - Abraham gives Lot the choice
Genesis 13:10 KJV 1900
And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
vs. 11: Lot journeys east
Genesis 13:12 KJV 1900
Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.
Genesis 13:13 KJV 1900
But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly.
God reiterates His promise with Abraham! (vs. 14-16)
That land which he sees, is promised… Lot looked up and beheld the valley of Jordan… Moses declares the region for those who desired to stay on the other side of Jordan.
Deuteronomy 34:3 KJV 1900
And the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar.
Genesis 14 - Battle of the kings...
Vale - A body of water…
Genesis 37:14 KJV 1900
And he said to him, Go, I pray thee, see whether it be well with thy brethren, and well with the flocks; and bring me word again. So he sent him out of the vale of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
Joshua 10:40 KJV 1900
So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel commanded.
Zoar is the nameless king… Zoar means little place...
Gen. 14:10 - The region is full of slimepits…
We have seen slime before…
Genesis 11:3 KJV 1900
And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
Genesis 18 - The destruction of Sodom of Gomorrah…
Genesis 18:1 KJV 1900
And the Lord appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
Notice what we see...
Genesis 18:2 KJV 1900
And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,
“And they said...”
Genesis 18:8–9 KJV 1900
And he took butter, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat. And they said unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.
Read vs. 16-22
Genesis 18:33 KJV 1900
And the Lord went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
Chapter 19 - Two Angels
Genesis 19:1 KJV 1900
And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
Consider...
Genesis 19:11 KJV 1900
And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves to find the door.
Romans 1:28–32 KJV 1900
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.
2 Corinthians 13:5 KJV 1900
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
Titus 1:16 KJV 1900
They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.
Read. Genesis 19:12-18.
Mercy!
Genesis 19:19 KJV 1900
Behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shewed unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest some evil take me, and I die:
I want to close here tonight and leave us with this thought...
vs. 22 - “for I cannot do any thing till though be come thither...”
Abraham asked God this question back in chapter 18...
Genesis 18:23 KJV 1900
And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
Then the Bible tell s us why Lot was removed...
Genesis 19:29 KJV 1900
And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.
Romans 4:13 KJV 1900
For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
Romans 4:16 KJV 1900
Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
We understand all of this is possible through Christ...
Hebrews 2:16 KJV 1900
For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the seed of Abraham.
Galatians 3:16 KJV 1900
Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
2 Peter 2:6–9 KJV 1900
And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly; And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: (For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
1 Corinthians 3:15 KJV 1900
If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
