Prayer During Election
Prayer During Election
What to pray for during an election
During elections hopes and fears are on the rise. It seems like every 4 years we believe the world is going to end. Even though we forget that America is just one nation among 195. And among the 8 billion some people in the world we only have 4% of the world’s population in our country. So 96% of the worlds population doesn’t even really think about what we do. America is interesting in how much we think that we dominate the world.
Like we think that many people from one party or the other could be the one who brings about the end times. We think that we are at the center place of all time and civilization. But in reality we are just 4% of a population among another 96%. We are in the changing of 1 presidential race among thousands of rulership changes over the history of the world. And it is important to remember that God is sovereign over all. That He is the one that we are to go to because He is the one who appoints Kings. Romans 13:1 “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.”
Daniel 2:21 “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding;”
So God is over this election. And God has placed you as a believer in this nation in a unique position. You are to steward your citizenship in this republic for the Glory of God. And God is going to use you to bring about His purposes and plans. So it is important during these elections to be aware of God’s sovereign control over all things and that He is the one who has placed us here for His Glory and our good. He is the one that we need to appeal to during this time that we might live for His eternal Kingdom which will never pass away and will go on for all eternity.
So in today’s Sunday school I want us to focus on this topic. What things am I to be in prayer over during an election season?1. Pray that you might not fall into fear or anxiousness. 2. Pray that you might set your hope only in God. 3. Confess the sins of your nation and request from God for His grace in this upcoming election. 4. Pray for revival. 5. Pray for the ruler to be a force for upholding justice and doing what is good.. 6. Pray that your ruler may submit themselves to God. 7. Pray that the church might be salt and light in this country and to be unstained as she waits for the coming of her Savior. 8. Pray for peace in the nation and for unity (as long as it is up to you be at peace with all people).
Anxiety and fear come because we believe that something bad is going to happen. We are told hundreds of times throughout the Bible to not be afraid. But why?
Psalm 118:6 “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”
Why are we not to fear?
Matthew 10:28 “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.”
Why are we not to be afraid of man?
Luke 12:29–30 “And do not seek what you are to eat and what you are to drink, nor be worried. For all the nations of the world seek after these things, and your Father knows that you need them.”
Why are not to worry about economic hard ships, lack of resources, or other necessities?
Pray then that you might not fall into fleshly temptations. Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
When did Jesus say this to his disciples?
Where is our heart?
Pray that you might set your hope on God.
1 Peter 1:13 “Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
Where are we to set our hope?
Why does Peter tell us to set our hope on God?
bc we might not.
We are always tempted to not set our hope on God but to trust in other things.
Confess the sins of your nation and request from God for His grace in this upcoming election.
Why should we confess the sins of the nation?- We are appealing to God for his grace on an unrighteous people.
We are appealing to God for his grace on an unrighteous people.
Daniel 9:16 ““O Lord, according to all your righteous acts, let your anger and your wrath turn away from your city Jerusalem, your holy hill, because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people have become a byword among all who are around us.”
We recognize the sin of our nation and do not presume upon’s God’s grace. We do not become nationalistic but we willing look at the ugly part of who our nation is and ask for the Lords help.
We are confessing our own sins.
Nehemiah 1:6 “let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even I and my father’s house have sinned.”
We are seeking to be the man that God uses to reach this culture and to turn them to God.
Ezekiel 22:30 “And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.”
Pray for Rival.
First part in praying for rival is to pray that we might be courageous to declare the Word of God.
Ephesians 6:19–20 “and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.”
We need to pray that we might be armed with the Word of God to declare it that people may believe and come to know Christ.
Romans 10:14 “How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?”
Pray for the ruler to be a force for upholding justice and doing what is good.
1 Timothy 2:1–4 “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
Romans 13:3–4 “For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.”
1 Peter 2:13–14 “Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.”
Pray for your ruler that they may submit themselves to God.
Daniel 5:22–23 “And you his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this, but you have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven. And the vessels of his house have been brought in before you, and you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines have drunk wine from them. And you have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not see or hear or know, but the God in whose hand is your breath, and whose are all your ways, you have not honored.”
Daniel 4:34 “At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation;”
Pray that we might salt and light, kept unstained until Christ coming
Matthew 5:13 ““You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.”
Matthew 5:16 “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
1 Timothy 2:2–4 “for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
Pray for peace in the nation and for unity.
Romans 12:18 “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”
Amos 3:3 ““Do two walk together, unless they have agreed to meet?”
1 Timothy 2:1–2 “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”
