On Mission and Continuing the Mission

Matthew 28:18–20 (NASB95)

18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

The only Command in the Great Commission MAKE DISCIPLES.

Baptizing is the way of initiating the path of Discipleship. It’s the first step of obedience after faith.

Discipleship is the method of maturing people to be like Jesus. Discipleship is reflected in but not limited to these activities:

Disciple occurs 269 times in the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles.

Private and Church worship.

Serving one another.

Studying the Word.

b. The Process of Discipleship Starts when a person receives the gospel.

Jesus calls all of us to be ready to share the Gospel.

2. Effective sharing comes

Under Christ’s authority.

in the power of the Holy Spirit.

in partnership with the church, the Body of Christ.

Ephesians 3:10 NLT

10 God’s purpose in all this was to use the church to display his wisdom in its rich variety to all the unseen rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.

3. The Great Commission comes because the Greatest need a person has is a relationship with God.

C. The church exists to grow people into mature disciples.

Ephesians 4:11–13 CSB

11 And he himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, to build up the body of Christ, 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of God’s Son, growing into maturity with a stature measured by Christ’s fullness.
