1 Samuel 17:31–40 (CSB)
31 What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, so he had David brought to him. 32 David said to Saul, “Don’t let anyone be discouraged by him; your servant will go and fight this Philistine!”
33 But Saul replied, “You can’t go fight this Philistine. You’re just a youth, and he’s been a warrior since he was young.”
34 David answered Saul, “Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep. Whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a lamb from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it down, and rescued the lamb from its mouth. If it reared up against me, I would grab it by its fur, strike it down, and kill it. 36 Your servant has killed lions and bears; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37 Then David said, “The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”
Saul said to David, “Go, and may the Lord be with you.”
38 Then Saul had his own military clothes put on David. He put a bronze helmet on David’s head and had him put on armor. 39 David strapped his sword on over the military clothes and tried to walk, but he was not used to them. “I can’t walk in these,” David said to Saul, “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off. 40 Instead, he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the wadi and put them in the pouch, in his shepherd’s bag. Then, with his sling in his hand, he approached the Philistine.
People of God we are living in a society that is so fixated on being like the next person!! In this generation and the previous one like it, there has been a rise in medical dignoses of anxiety, depression and many more things like it. Now while there is medical science to back those claims, we can pinpoint is back a few things. One of them being comparison!! In this life we compare a lot of things. We sometimes ask questions like Am I pretty enough, Popular Enough, Trendy Enough. Do I have what everyone else thinks I should have. Nice house, Nice car, nice lady or a man next to me. Does society call me a success!! Do we not see the problem with this!! The problem is that God has not called us to base our Identity on the views of the world!! God has called us for a different purpose. This is the same problem with the church and if we are not careful we will miss what God has for us because we are looking at other people!! God has called us to a life of dependance and trust in him. Life will have us thinking that we have to rush to get to a certain place in life. By 30 I need to get to this place or by this time I need to be here. But God is saying I have equipped you with everything you need to win in this life. Just like our text today we have to say I can’t wear this!!
Turn to your neighbor and say neighbor!! I can’t wear this!!
In order for us to get to this place in our lives we have to do three things

Rehearse what God has Done

Now we have parked right in the middle of one of the famous bible passages. The story of David and Goliath. We have heard this story in most of our children churches growing up and even in Sports metaphors. But where are we in the text?
I’m glad you asked!! Rewind back to chapter 16. It starts off with God telling Samuel, “How long will you greive over Saul!!” God tells Samuel to go to Bethlaham and go to Jesse house and anoint one of his sons. Samuel looks at the first son and God says no, 2nd, no, 3rd no. Samuel looked at seven sons and God says no. God tells Samuel, “Man looks at the outward apperance but I look at the heart. I want to tell someone I here to Stop trying to offer up the choice things to God! THAT not what he wants. He want’s that thing that is on the backside of the desert tending sheep. Samuel asks Jesse I there another son. Jesse says, It just my Son David!! Samuel said we will not sit down until he come. God is saying the same thing. We will not sit down until you come. The Angels will not sit down until you stop playing around and Give to God that which you think is insignificant!! So David is anointed!! But Saul is vexed by an evil spirit!! David goes to Sauls house and plays skillfully before the Saul and the evil spirit left. Fast forward to chapter 17. The Philistines and the Isreallites are at a stand off!! Goliath comes forth and challenges the children of Isreal. None of them step up. There is something in your life that is standing up and defying the God you belelive in and trust in. This went on for 40 days. David was sent to the battle to just check up on his brother. He overheard Goliath and he got righteously mad. Saul over heard and called him to his chambers!! David says Don’t be discouraged by him, your servant will go and fight the Philistine. Saul gives David reasons why he cant fight and listing reason how Goliath will win.
This point is call rehearse what God has done. Because to rehearse means to actively recall and meditate on the specific instances where God has shown his goodness, faithfulness, and power in your life, essentially reminding yourself of his past actions to strengthen your faith and trust in him during challenging times; it's like mentally going over a list of blessings and miracles to deepen your appreciation for God's presence. David did this instinctively!! When Saul told him that he was just a youth and that he couldnt go out and fight Goliath. He began to rehearse or recount what God had done for him!!
1 Samuel 17:34–37 (CSB)
We have to make this a concious effort to remind God of what he’s done. Reason why is because somethings in our life seem so big but when we think back over our lives and see how God has truly brought us over and through. That obstacle we thought was big will start to become small and we can truly see clearly. Right now we need to take a moment right now and think about were God brought us from.
David said this to Saul, the Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of the Philistine!! When go back over the things God has done, we become more assured of his willingness to do it again. We tend to forget that his is all powerful. We tend to forget that he is Jehovah Jireh, our provider. Jehovah Nissi, our banner. We have to remind ourselves and put God in remembrance of his word and what he’s done for us.
So the first reason as to why I can’t wear this!! Is because I rehearsed what God has done.

Recognize who you are

David has just finished rehearsing what God has done for him in the previous time in his life!! Now Saul has just given David the go ahead to go and fight Goliath!! But Saul did something that sounded good but as we look at it with a different lenese, it really wasn’t nessacry. Now lets think about this from the natural perceptive. Now if he going to fight somebody he would need to have on some armor. If you fight in the army you have to have certain tactical gear on if you are going to win in a fire fight. David naturally need the armor, but spiritually he really didn’t. David appeased the King, because to resist the king would be treason. So David tried on the armor. Helmet,Breastplate, braces, shoes, sword, the whole 9!! But something didn’t feel right. David tried to walk in it!! But he couldn’t!! Reason being is because David said I’m not used to this. Another translation says I haven’t trained for this!! This is powerful because David recognized who he was!! He recognized that Yeah, this armor is good and all but how can i fight in this. If Ive never trained for this.
But how many of us would have wore the armor.
Helmet falling down
Breastplate falling down to the side.
Having to pull your pants up because they are sagging on you.
All because of what someone thinks we should have on!!
We think that if I say no then I’m being to bougie. But God is saying Recognize who I equipped you to be. There will come a time when Knowing who you are in Christ will matter. It will a pivitol moment in our lives!! There are going to be things that will try and weigh on us and try to get us to be lack but God is saying I need you to become more aware of who you are in me!!
You been acting all out of character trying to tell people off all because you tired to being pushed over!! But you feel uncomfortable because you know and God knows that doesn’t fit who God called you to be!!
We have to know and to recognize who God made us to be!!
We have to look over our lives and see what doesnt fit in our lives.
We have been sitting with so much stuff on, trying to walk in God’s purpose. But we have so much stuff on that its hard for us to fully walk in what God has for us to do.
We have gotten comfortable in the wrong stuff!!
We have taken on the worlds mentality and phlosipy for alot of thing but Deep down we know that it doesn’t fit right!!
We have to know that i’m a child of the most high king.
I’m the head and not the tail
Above and not beneath
I’m a lender and not a borrower
We have to begin to speak God’s word over our life.
Stop letting depression, anxiety, anger, strife and malice rest in our heart. We have to tell those things I can’t wear you anymore. I put on love, patience, Joy, Peace.
David had to be sure enough in what God has done in him to tell the King I can’t wear this!!
David had to recognize who he was!!

Return to what you know!!

After David rejected the kings armor. He took his staff in his hand and chose 5 smooth stones put them in his sheperd bag. Took his slingshot and approached the Philistine.
David went back to what he knew!! David knew and trusted in the slingshot. He beat wolves with this. Beat back bears with this. Fought lions with this!! I know this!!
What do we have in our lives that has brought us over multiple times!!
We can trust in the things of the word.
We have to be as confident in the word of God as David was in his Slingshot!!
We have to return to his word!!
We have to return to prayer
We have to return to fellowship
We have to return to God!!
I can’t wear this because I have to return to what I know!!
Closing
What do you have in your arsenal!!
Do you have more of the world in you? Or is there more word in you!!
We have allowed the world to punk us into thinking that the ways of old don’t work and is obsolete.
But the church is on a ride to arrive to their rightful place in God. We are about to take our rightful place!!
