Cause and Effect
Cause and Effect
- The direct relationship between an action or event and its consequence or result
We have just spent 2 weeks going over the Beatitudes
The inward change that brings outward action
We started with understanding our need
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Then to our outward expression
9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
The question is: How should this affect our world?
If you want a religion to make you feel comfortable, I certainly don’t recommend Christianity. C.S.Lewis
Today we look at the effects caused by Living lives marked by Grace.
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Salt
Salt serves 2 purposes in Scripture -brings flavor and prevent corruption
13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.
Salt is very valuable - used to pay soldiers
When we live the way we are meant to - it brings healing and flavor to our world
Lose Saltiness - lose Grace but when we lose the message and power through compromise - culture suffers
3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
Light
Light illuminates and irradiates
14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Light cannot be hidden - faith cannot be private
It is for all to see
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?
It should be a natural out pouring
We are told to let our light shine, and if it does, we won't need to tell anybody it does. Lighthouses don't fire cannons to call attention to their shining- they just shine.
Dwight L. Moody
It should point to God not us
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Salt and Light
There is a common, worldly kind of Christianity in this day, which many have, and think they have enough – a cheap Christianity which offends nobody, and requires no sacrifice – which costs nothing, and is worth nothing. J.C. Ryle
Salt and Light
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
We are the sent ones
When we don't live out the Grace in us the world suffers
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
As we are going - we are sharing (make disciples), building relationships (baptizing), encouraging growth (teaching)
We show and tell His story in us -
Cause and Effect
Cause and Effect
Cause - the inward change Christ has made
Effect - outward living that reflects that change
16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Next week - Law and Grace - Matthew 5:17-20
