Matthew 27:32–50 (ESV)
32 As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to carry his cross. 33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34 they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his garments among them by casting lots. 36 Then they sat down and kept watch over him there. 37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.” 38 Then two robbers were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ” 44 And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way. 45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour. 46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 47 And some of the bystanders, hearing it, said, “This man is calling Elijah.” 48 And one of them at once ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine, and put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink. 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.” 50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.

“ The Trip to Golgotha “

Golgotha
A hill outside of Jerusalem where Jesus was crucified (Matt 27:33; Mark 15:22; John 19:17).
Also known by its Latin translation, Calvary.
Translated into English as “The Place of the Skull” or “The Skull.”
On this hill Jesus had
A Vicarious Death
A Victorious Death
A Voluntary Death
And also on this hill
The Crucifixion of Jesus death Consist of
SHAME, SUFFERING & SHEDDING of BLOOD
That took place on Golgotha
This Was & Is the “ Trip to Golgotha “
Was — What Jesus went through
Is — What we’re going to go through [ Pain Suffering Shame & feeling forsaken ]
Julius Caesar
Charles the first
Louis The XVI
Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Czar Nicholas the Second
All of these
Are Kings in history
Who where killed
In defiance of their RIGHT to RULE
The technical term
Is called “ Regicide “
Regicide — is the killing of a king
Regicide is generally
About rebellion and revolution
Kings are killed
For political purposes
The assassination intends
To overthrow their government
And usurp power to people for themselves
But Matthew
Presents a strange occurrence
Of regicide in history
He shows
The killing of a king
The crucifixion of Jesus Christ
Is unique because
Matthew turns regicide Inside out
The killing of this king
Do not usurp His power
He establishes it
It does not end His reign
He inaugurates it
And like many
Famous episodes
Regicide in history
It is the result of a conspiracy
Roman ego
Religious Envy
And righteous purposes
Have all conspired
To kill this king
Jesus The Christ
In the text
Jesus has prepared
For His on killing
Note: When you are doing the WILL of God you have to prepare for the worse of times and demonic activity from within the church and your personal life
Example: Prepare for Hurricane SEASON not just for a HURRICANE
Jesus has develop
His disciple
And painted a picture
Of His passion
And using the celebration
Of the Passover
And then in Gethsemane
He prayed about His killing
He grieves His on death
Prior to it’s occurrence
In Gethsemane
When He prays
Until sweat like blood
Falls from His forehead
Jesus
Was fully aware
And a co-conspirator
In His on killing
And there in Gethsemane
When He cry's & prays
He reminds us
That His killing
Is an act of divine care
And Love
1st Jesus was a co-conspirator in His own death
2nd His death was an act of divine care & love
Jesus was agreeing
To His own Killing
While Matthew
Is establishing Jesus is king
At the same time
Jesus doesn't look like a KING
Example: We love to say “ You don’t look like what you’ve been through “ but I have a great respect for those that LOOK LIKE what they been through
Example: Come to work [ hair nappy, clothes wrinkle, shoes worn out ]
What Matthew does
Is he Turns
This story
Inside out
When we pick up
In Verse 32
Jesus has been arrested
He has been tried
He has been convicted
He has been condemned
He has been mocked
He has been beaten
And now
It's time to take
That long walk
To Golgotha
Matthew 27:32 (ESV)
32 As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to carry his cross.
A black Jew
Name Simon
Helps Jesus carry His cross

“ The trip to Golgotha “

1st: Nobody can carry your cross

On the first
It looks like
Simon is carrying
Jesus Cross
Jesus has been
Caught—Convicted—Condemned
“It just looks like
Simon carrying the Cross:
1st Simon was carrying a Cross that wasn’t for him
Note: Each of us in here got a CROSS & ONLY you can carry it
2nd Simon was carrying a cross that he couldn’t handle
Note: NOBODY else can HANDLE your CROSS
3rd Simon was carrying a cross that wasn’t his assignment
Note: NOBODY ELSE HAS YOUR ASSIGNMENT
And that’s what you have to understand About your Cross
But there’s a point
That Simon
Will lay the Cross down
And Christ will have to
Pick it back up
But if we
Turn it
Inside Out
Jesus is not
The one
That really deserves
This Cross
It’s not
Simon carrying
Jesus Cross
It is Jesus
Carrying Simon’s Cross
It reminds me
That the Cross
Of Christ
Is always a participatory exercise
Whenever
We see Jesus
Carrying the Cross
We have to remember
“That’s My Cross” He’s bearing
Example: The bellman at EK Bailey carry our bags out of the car to the cart but I got to pick it back up.
The Bellboy—>
Quote: Love carry loads that don’t belong to them.
Statement: Pastors carry loads that don’t belong to them. He helps you in what he’s bound in
And because Jesus
Bore my Cross
of Sin & Shame
And died in my place
I should be willing
To bear His cross of Purpose & Pain
And be Ostracized and Criticize
SONG: “Must Jesus bear the Cross along & All the world go free”
“No”
“There’s a Cross for everyone & There’s a Cross for me”
Remember to Carry your Cross
Now they moved
To the hill called
Golgotha
The soldiers
Offer Him
This wine
Mixed with gall
Jesus tasted it
Recognized that it is
A form of anesthesia
To dull His pain
For the process
of Crucifixion
And He refuses to drink it
Matthew 27:34 (ESV)
34 they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it.

“ The trip to Golgotha “

1st: Nobody can carry your cross

2nd: Things that ease Pain can hinder Purpose

The anesthesia
Will dull Christ ability
To be fully present
In the Painful moment of His Purpose
WHY ??? Jesus refused it to stay in the present of the moment
Example : The ole school mothers didn’t take the epidural for child birth / they stayed in the moment [ Epidural ]
Example : Some pain killers have side effects
While Matthew
Offers only one of them
The comparative study
Of the Crucifixion
In all 4 gospels
They have Jesus speaking
7 Key critical words
or statements
That is still giving life
While He’s giving His life
Luke 23:34 (KJV 1900) 34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
Luke 23:43 (KJV 1900) 43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
John 19:26–27 (KJV 1900) 26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.
These 7 critical statements
That are significant
And life giving
Would not had been possible
If He had gotten
High on pain killers
Jesus presents
A model purpose
A model for what
It means to be
Fully present in the pain of purpose
Know that purpose
Is often verified
And can only be rightly
Worked out in Pain
Note: Our culture is looking for Pain Killers but there’s no pain killers on God’s assignment but there is a muscle relaxer [ PRAY — Garden of Gethsemane ]
Quote: You can never be your best you , without some pain, some agony, some hurt, some disappointment, and some brokenness.
Sometimes
Doing God’s will
you need some type
of pain killers
And even though
It will make you
Feel Better
It’s not going to help you
Function Better
And even though
It will help your emotional
With the Reality
It will not
Help your spiritual develop
Sometimes
you just got to go on
And Feel
The Nails—Feel the thorns— Feel the Spear — Feel the cross — Feel the Mocking — Feel the canonized tails
Sometimes
you need the pain
So that you can Properly
Execute your purpose

“ The trip to Golgotha “

1st: Nobody can carry your cross

2nd: Things that ease Pain can hinder Purpose

3rd Your enemies sometimes Affirm your assignment

Sometimes
As we see in the text
God will use your
Enemies & Haters
To affirm that you are in His Will
Note: The enemy will NEVER come against something or someone that’s not God given
Note: It could be your SIBLINGS - GRANDCHILDREN - BOSS - COWORKERS - CHURCH FOLKS
Note: Learn how to appreciate your enemies because they are tools for God to use for your assignment.
The claim
That they are attempting
To dismiss
They are actually affirming
Note: Note the charge against Him
Matthew 27:37 (ESV) 37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”
The fuller picture
Presented by John’s Gospel
It helps us to see better
It’s actually
Written in 3 languages
Greek-Latin-Aramaic
This is Jesus
of Nazareth
The King of the Jews John 19:19
John 19:19 (ESV) 19 Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”
They are dividing
His garments
And the bible says
They nailed Him between
What the ESV translate says
Two robbers
These are actually
Rebels
These two robbers
Who are freedom fighters
You’re looking at
The Crucifixion
of 3 Freedom fighters
Two failed
Only one succeed
This accusation
That He claims
To be the
King of the Jews
They don’t realize
As they are
mocking Him
And deriding Him
And laughing at Him
They are actually affirming Him
In fact
Even the small
task of taking
His garments
And casting lots for them
They are AFFIRMING
It is a fulfilment
of Psalm 22:18
They are actually
Affirming Him [ Casting Lots is not gambling ]
Those 2 freedom fighters
Who wanted
To overthrow
Roman government & Power
Engaged in Violence insurrection
And they failed
Because military might
was not the need
But this Single
Freedom fighter
In the middle
Did not engage in violence insurrection
He’s engaged
In passive
Overcoming
Because sometimes Church
You got to have
That Muhammad Ali
Rope-a-dope Strategy
I’m going to
Let you do
your worse to me
And let you punch
Yourself Out
That’s what’s
Happening on the Cross
Roman is punching
It’s self out
The worst
Roman can do to Jesus
Is crucify Him
But He can take Crucifixion
Which was a tool of death
And turn it
Inside Out
Into
A tool of Life
He is the King
Of the Jews
He is the King
of Kings
He is the Lord
Of Lords

The claim that they are trying to dismiss they are actually Affirming

He handled
The Nails
He handled
The Thorns
He handled
The Wipe
He handled
The Spear
To affirm that He is Indeed the King of the Jews

“ The trip to Golgotha “

1st: Nobody can carry your cross

2nd: Things that ease Pain can hinder Purpose

3rd Your enemies sometimes Affirm your assignment

4th It’s going to look like you need saving

Matthew 27:42 (ESV) 42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
Quote: Jesus looks like He needs saving, like He can’t save, and like He won’t be saved, while He’s saving
Matthew 27:39–43 (ESV) 39 And those who passed by [derided him, wagging their heads] 40 and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, [save yourself!] [If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross]41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42[He saved others]; he cannot save himself. He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”
Look at Verse 36—The soldiers sat over to watch to make sure nobody came over to help, because people would sneak in and pull people down from their Crucifixion.
Matthew 27:36 (ESV)
36 Then they sat down and kept watch over him there.
Quote: Jesus looks like He needs saving, like He can’t save, and like He won’t be saved, while He’s saving.
Statement: Your ministry is going to be at it’s BEST when you’re hanging on the CROSS
Note: That language of salvation is very interesting because they are trying to assess Jesus spiritual person based on His circumstantial experience.
They are trying
To decide
Who Jesus is
In eternity
By what He’s going thru
At this time
They are trying
To denial
That He is the
Sinless, Spotless, Lamb of God
Because He is
Blood stained at the present moment
That helps me to know
That you can’t determine
Who a person is
By where a person is
Because sometimes
Circumstances
That look like
They are negative
Are actually positive
Sometimes
circumstance that looks
To be problematic
Are actually solutions
Sometimes
When it seems like
God is not at work
Are actually times that
He is at work
If you need evidence
Just look at Jesus
[ Picture Jesus on the Cross, Look at Jesus just hanging there on that Cross] —— That’s God at WORK
And sometimes
when God is at work
You’re just hanging
On a cross
And it Hurts
And you’re crying
And you’ve been betrayed
And you’ve been denied
And you’re disappointed
And you’re discombobulated
And you’re confused
And you’re wondering if it’s worth it
Can I just give you a Clue
DIE FOOL — JUST DIE
That’S what Jesus did on the cross

“ The trip to Golgotha “

1st: Nobody can carry your cross

2nd: Things that ease Pain can hinder Purpose

3rd Your enemies sometimes Affirm your assignment

4th It’s going to look like you need saving

Song:
Alas! and did my Savior bleed And did my Sov’reign die? Would He devote that sacred head For such a worm as I?
Was it for crimes that I had done He groaned upon the tree? Amazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree!
Well might the sun in darkness hide And shut his glories in, When Christ, the mighty Maker died, For man the creature’s sin.
Thus might I hide my blushing face While His dear cross appears, Dissolve my heart in thankfulness, And melt my eyes to tears.
But drops of grief can ne’er repay The debt of love I owe: Here, Lord, I give myself away, ’Tis all that I can do.
Those words
written by Isaac Watts
were sung from 1707-1885
A 178 years
Those words were sung
That same way every time
But in 1885
A man named Ralph F. Hudson
was singing that Hymn
And got happy
And Hudson added a Chorus
To those 5 verses
And His chorus was
Refrain (Hudson): At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away, It was there by faith I received my sight, And now I am happy all the day!
