Cooking and fellowship starts at 5:30 am and they eat about 7 am with a devotion to follow
Sheldon Baptist Church
Last week we started Who Am I? our mini series within the IT sermon series
IT again is the only thing that matters: Salvation and Discipleship
However, God is showing us those must be built upon a firm foundation
The first part of that foundation is the answer to the question Who am I?
I felt God leading me to Romans 8 to find that answer
Last week we looked at vs 1-4 and found part of the answer to Who am I? is FREE in Christ!
Free from condemnation
Free from the law of sin and death
Free from sin itself
Complete Freedom in Christ Jesus!
This morning we will continue in Romans 8.
If you missed last week the sermon and sermon notes are up on our website and app
Lets Pray
This morning we will be in Romans 8:5-17. go ahead and start turning there in your Bible if you would
If you use your phone for your Bible feel free to do so....also there is a Bible on our app cccnevadamo at both the apple store and the play store

Romans 8:5–17

____________________________________________

5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies xby his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Who am I?

II. In the Spirit

________________________

Now part of the IT series will be preaching through what we believe here at CCC and why we believe it
The Holy Spirit will be part of that…however to grasp this part of Romans 8 and Who am I we must discuss the Holy Spirit briefly this morning
Holy Spirit is God…part of the trinity…He is given to us by God at salvation

Ephesians 1:13–14

________________________

“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”
As you can see from scripture Holy Spirit is given to us at salvation
I fully believe this based upon scripture
At salvation one is given the Holy Spirit

John 14:15–17

________________________

“If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”
The Father gives you the Holy Spirit
You can’t earn the Holy Spirit
You will never deserve the Holy Spirit
You can’t earn or gain more Holy Spirit
At salvation God gives you the Holy Spirit
You are not able to gain more Holy Spirit as He is a Him.......a person.....you can’t gain more of a person
Through obedience you grow closer to the Holy Spirit and you also become more in tune with Him....hearing Him louder and clear because you are closer to Him but you will never be able to gain more of Him
Jesus speaks of this maturing process at in vs 15
If ye love me keep my commandments
Many may say Pastor Josh keep my commandments....action on our part so therefore you earn the Holy Spirit
You are missing Jesus’ point and the point of the entire Bible
Until you are saved you can’t keep Jesus commandments.....when you are saved you receive the Holy Spirit and He enables you to keep Jesus commandments
If you could do it on your own no one would need Jesus or Holy Spirit
Also notice the world can’t have the Holy Spirit
why
because they are not saved
only Christians who receive the Holy Spirit at salvation
once saved you are in the Spirit
What does that mean
to be in the Spirit?
What impact does it have on us
Lets go back to Romans 8. to find out

1. Battlefield of the mind vs 5-6

________________________

Romans 8:5–6

________________________

“For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”
Who or what do we mind
to mind is from a Greek verb means to entertain or have a sentiment or opinion, disposed, interest oneself in, set the affection on
remember affection according to websters 1828 means bent mind towards something, passion and excitement, desire
What you think about
what you are passionate about
what you desire
That is your affection and that should be set upon the Spirit but you can choose to set it upon the flesh
You either mind after the flesh and the things of the flesh or the Spirit and the things of the Spirit
notice you cant do both
you cant have a little flesh and the rest Spirit
What excites you
what do you get passionate about
what do you desire
If those things are fleshly you mind the flesh
you are after the flesh
therefore against the Spirit
Even within ministry you must be careful
Yesterday was a great event but unfortunately for some Christians who were there they minded the flesh and not the Spirit
They were so focused on the hunting and the physical they missed the real reason God created Faith and Feathers....to bring Him to kids
We can get so caught up in the physical…fleshly side of ministry we miss the Holy Spirit
As we grow together
As we grow closer to God
As God reveals through the Holy Spirit your ministries we must keep the main thing the main thing
God Himself
The Holy Spirit
Jesus Christ and the Gospel
That is all that matters
God throughout the entire old testament is point to Jesus
Point to the Gospel
Pointing to the change that would happen on the cross
In the old testament we were separated from God because of our sin
before salvation you and I are separated by God by our sin
We can do nothing on our own about our sin problem
the wages of sin is death.....your spiritual death and my spiritual death
To pay that penalty....to face Gods full wrath means eternal separation from God for us
Jesus is the only answer
not the law
not a church
not a ministry
not a sinners prayer
nothing other that JESUS HIMSELF!
Because of that we must mind the things of the Spirit and put to death the things of the flesh
This is why what you put into your mind matters
reading
listening
watching
all of those matter are those things fleshly or Spiritual

Galatians 5:16–18

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.”

Galatians 5:25

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

________________________

Your walk matters church
your words matter church
your thoughts matter church
This is a great teaching on the civil war happening inside each and every Christian alive today
Your flesh
your lusts
your desires
your passions
all actively go against the Spirit
the things of the Spirit
Love
Joy
Peace
Longsuffering
Gentleness
Goodness
Faith
Meekness
Temperance
Those actively go against the flesh
You must choose a side daily......many times multiple times a day
Not only do you receive the Holy Spirit at salvation but Romans also teaches

2. Spirit proves you are saved vs 9-11

________________________

Romans 8:9–11

________________________

“But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.”
Once saved you receive the Holy Spirit
He then begins to transform you by the renewing of your mind
Jesus says in order to be saved you must count the cost
Part of that cost you must count is taking up your cross daily and dying to self daily....that is only done through the power of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 6:18–20

________________________

“Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”
You are not your own
The Holy Spirit lives inside of you
Jesus bought you with His life
His blood
As you realize this
as you believe this
as you apply this to your life through the Holy Spirit
you change
You must change
You are not your own
you were bought with a price
you see scriptures like this and you do what they say
you flee fornication because you understand what you are doing and how much that hurts God and separates you from God
As the Holy Spirit resides in you He works
He produces fruit
He is God and nothing can or will stop Him from producing fruit

Galatians 5:22–23

________________________

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
You see all of these things being produced in you by the Holy Spirit
your thoughts begin to change
your words begin to change
your reactions begin to change
your behavior begins to change
your relationships begin to change
you know you are saved because you have the Holy Spirit and can feel and see Him working in you
Not only do you receive the Holy Spirit at salvation, not only does the Spirit prove that salvation but you realize

3. You are debtors vs 12-13

________________________

Romans 8:12–13

________________________

“Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.”
Because you are bought with such a high price you owe everything to Jesus!
How do you express that debt or gratitude to Jesus

Colossians 3:5–11

________________________

“Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.”
You die to you
You die to the world
You die to sin
You die to the passions and lusts and desires of the flesh
That is what is being taught here in Colossians
Mortify comes from a Greek verb that means to deaden, to subdue, be dead
You cant continue to entertain
you cant continue to justify
you cant continue to willingly do the things mentioned in Colossians and claim to mortify them
You must be dead to them
I dont care how much you love them
I dont care how much you enjoy them
I dont care how much money you have spent on them
KILL THEM
MORTIFY THEM
Get rid of them
Quit making excuses to keep them and mortify them
That is done through the Holy Spirit
When you are reading scripture and you get that tug at your heart
that conviction to change
that need to do something
that is the Holy Spirit leading you and growing you
what do you do with it?
you only have two choices....
ignore and continue with life and quench the Holy Spirit
or
Mortify the things called to mortify
respond to that conviction in an obedient and loving manner realizing that is God loving you as His child which brings us to our last point this morning

4. You Are a Child of God vs 14-17

________________________

Romans 8:14–17

________________________

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.”
Here is the beauty of this all
Through salvation
Through Jesus’ blood shed on the cross for your sins and my sins
Through the Holy Spirit we become sons and daughters of God
You can’t miss this
The Old Testament saints didnt have this opportunity
This is only through Jesus
God’s plan began through the physical
Jews
Physical bloodline proving they were one of God’s chosen people but we see in II Kings 17 Israel completely rejecting God
God knew this was going to happen long before He created us
Long before He entered into covenant with His people
He knew they would reject Him
He still honored His part of the covenant as Jesus is from the physical bloodline however the Jews rejected God not only in II Kings but also by rejecting Jesus Himself
You must accept Jesus to be a son or daughter of God
Anyone or anything that teaches something different is blasphemy and you must reject it
stand against it
mortify it

Galatians 1:8

________________________

“But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”
Jesus is it folks
Who am I?
Christian
blood bought son or daughter of God through Jesus Himself
Nothing else
That is who you are
that is who I am
We live under the new covenant with is sealed with the blood of Jesus
We are the temples of God because the Holy Spirit lives inside of us
Because of that we die to us, the flesh, passions, lusts, desires, sin
Who am I?
That is the question you must ask yourself this morning
are you in the Spirit
do you know beyond shadow of a doubt you are saved
are you truly a debtor
do you realize and live as a child of God
If not come
Get with God
Bring it to Him here at the altar
I will pray over you, with you whatever you need
If you have never accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior come
This is the time!
