Spiritual Seed- Pt. II (Lessons 36-37) 12/3/24
Introduction:
This lesson will focus on three Old Testament characters that much is said to about the “seed promise.”
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
Aim:
To again look at the “spiritual seed” promise during what is known as the Abrahamic period.
To recall the scriptures where the promise is renewed and bring in the importance of Judah in regards to the promise.
Outline:
Abraham (Gen12:1-3, 18:18, 22:17-18)
All nations would be blessed by your seed
Each of these passages spells it out and you can read them in fact let’s look at the original (turn to Gen12:1-3)
Although Abraham did not see the promise; the promise did not die, it continued through his See Isaac
Isaac (Gen26:3-5)
God states will establish the oath that He made with father, Abraham (ref: Gen12:1-3, 15:1ff)
The promise is told to Isaac as Abrahams son, that through his seed all nations would be blessed, His seed being
Jacob (Gen28:10-14)
This points to a time in history.
The Lord God reveals His purpose and promise to the grandson of Abraham, Jacob.
The seed promise is reminded to Jacob too just as it was to Isaac and as given to Abraham.
Judah (Gen49:8-10)
Judah the son of Jacob is identified as the tribe through whom the royal seed would come.
Judah whose name means “praise, or brother of praise.”
The sceptre (authority or right of rule and judgment) shall not depart from Judah. That is until Shiloh (meaning peace) come and unto him shall the obedience of the people be
The impact of Judah is seen throughout the rest of the scripture being culminated in a few passages
Numbers 24:17; Mt2:2
Micah5:5; Eph2:14
Rev5:5
Heb7:14
Conclusion:
Genesis carefully records God’s eternal purpose. It was planned and providentially protected (the seed that is) throughout human history leading to Jesus
That purpose is pictured of the true and living God from Eden to Egypt (Adam - Abraham- Isaac-Jacob- captivity)
Then the impact of Judah, in fulfilling his eternal purpose of redemption.
Lesson 37 The Spiritual Seed Aspect
Aim:
To gain better understanding to appreciate the confirmation of the promise to David regarding the “son of David,” who was to come.
To see God’s power to carry out His good pleasure and purpose unto the “fullness of time.”
Outline:
David and his seed (2Sam7:11-16)
God promises the seed after David (v.12)
David’s house (family; seed) is chosen by God from tribe of Judah and the “seed line” continues
From Abraham to David, from David to Jesus Christ
Explanation of the prophesy (2Sam7:1-17)
David to be made a house (v.11)
This is not a material or spiritual house. but it is a physical house (2Sam7:27-28)
Davids offspring (seed) would be made a house by God (through Solomon) (again see 2Sam7:11-16; Heb3:6) for similar use of the word house
From David’s house a specific descendants (seed) is identified (2Sam7:12-17)
His kingdom will be established forever (vv.12-13)
He would build a house for Jehovah’s name (v.13)
His father would be God (v.14)
It was through David’s seed (offspring) that David’s house, David’s thrown would be established forever (v.16)
Solomon typifies the seed (vv. 11-16)
Solomon, David’s son through Bathsheba (2Sam12:24-25)
Solomon was established (but not forever) by Jehovah upon David’s throne (1Kng2:12)
Solomon built a house for the Lord (1Kng6)
Solomon is specifically spoken of in (vv.14-16) But Solomon is shown to typify Jesus Christ as follows (2Sam7:11-17)
Solomon Christ
Davids Seed 1. David’s seed (Rom1:2-4)
Sat on David’s throne 2. Sits on Davids throne Act2:30-31
His Kingdom established 3. His eternal kingdom (Col1:13; Rev5:9-
10; Eph5:5; Heb12:29
He built God’s house 4. He built Gods Church (Mt16:18;
Heb3:6; 1Tim3:15)
Conclusion:
The prophets spoke of the Messianic Hope from David’s seed.
Isa9:6-7
Government of peace, endless peace, king of peace
Peace not as the wold knows upeace (Jn14:27, Eph2:14ff) but through reconciliation and justification (Rom5:1-11); Peace through the cross (Col1:20; 1Pt1:18ff)
Peace through righteousness of God (Rom4:3-5)
As a side note that this invalidates the thought of the premillenial theory since if it was for the future then there is no Justification, reconciliation, forgiveness of sins, salvation, peace until someday in the future..
Jer33:15-18
There would be a branch, a shoot, from the root of David
The use of the word branch is significantly “Messianic”
See Isa11:1, Jer23:5-6, and Zech6:12-14
The birth of David’s seed (the Christ)who is the righteousness of God, was declared by Isaiah (Isa7:14ff; Mt1:18-23)
And finally that the birth of Jesus, born of a woman, brought about the fulness of the time (Gal4:4)
