So we have been going over the 10 commandments
What are the first 5 commandments?
Have no other Gods before me
Have no idols
Do not take the Lords name in vain
Keep the Sabbath and keep it holy
Honor your Father and Mother
You shall not Murder
Tonight we are rolling right into number 7
Anyone have any idea of what number 7 is?
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
What does that mean?
in short it means to not cheat on your spouse
We are to hold firm the sanctity of our marriage vows
This particular command shows the importance of the marriage vows
Those vows are so important and so powerful
Not only does this command show us the importance of marriage that it is not something to be taken lightly
But it is built on a previous command
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
If we are not to cheat on God with other small g gods and we are not to cheat on God with an image of what we think God looks like
Then we are not to cheat on each other
marriage is important
Church just like we are not to cheat on God with anything we are not to cheat on our spouse with anything
And when or if you do it is called sin
Sin separates you from God
So remember how like murder is more than physically murdering according to Jesus
Adultery is no different
When we think of adultery we think of physically cheating on our spouse
So if you are married having another girlfriend or boyfriend on the side
But like Murder Jesus takes it and now makes it a matter of the heart
So those guilty of adultery are not just physical anymore
27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery’; 28 but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Jesus fulfills the command by adding a matter of the heart to the command
It is no longer just about the physical act of cheating that causes you to be guilty of adultery
But now if you lust after someone in your heart you stand guilty of adultery before God
Jesus is saying if you look at someone with lust for them
Lust is inordinate desire for something
It is not just the physical act of cheating anymore
But it is the wrong desires for someone who is not your spouse
So it is not the initial look at someone that is the problem
But
When you start to dwell or take a second look is when it becomes the problem
See how you can see someone passing by and then begin to dwell on them in your mind or heart in a lustful way that is when you have committed adultery
This is why it is important that we study the law and under the commands Jesus calls us to follow
We talked last week how following commandments makes since and for a better
Anytime you are obedient to God is a better time than not
When you get married someday in the long future you will take that seriously which means not committing adultery
It is easier on the marriage when you don’t
Next week we will do Bible Trivia
