The translation of names from Adam to Noah

Adam - Man
Seth - appointed
Enosh - mortal
Kenan - humble/lowly
Mahalalel - Praised shining one of God
Jared - Descent
Enoch - Instruct
Methuselah - When he is dead it shall be sent
Lamech - to the low
Noah - Rest
We can re-phrase that as “Man is appointed mortal humility but the Praised one of God descends to instruct when he is dead the low will have rest.” Which sounds a lot like the whole story of the Bible to me.
Methuselah’s name though… “When he is dead it shall be sent” wow that’s a heck of a name… What were people expecting to happen when this kid died? Did you know something happened when he died? - The Flood - His name was apparently a prophecy likely by Enoch who after all was following God so closely he was taken up to be with God directly.
Methuselah's Age
Genesis 5:27 ESV
Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died.
The Age of Methuselah at Lamech's Birth
Genesis 5:25 ESV
When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech.
The Age of Lamech at Noah's Birth
Genesis 5:28–29 ESV
When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the Lord has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.”
187 + 182 = 369
Noah's Age at the Time of the Flood
Genesis 7:6 ESV
Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came upon the earth.
Methuselah's Death at Age 969 As established in Genesis 5:27, Methuselah lived 969 years, and the flood came when he would have reached that age.

The fallen world

The fallen world at this point sees 2 things happen. First
Genesis 6:1–4 ESV
When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.
This is where many get the idea people won’t be able to live longer than 120 years. However it could also be the time frame for when the coming destruction happens. This view is one held by ancient jewish and early church fathers. Things however continue to go downhill. God sees the evil of this intermarriage and in the following verses declares the world will be destroyed. So possibly there is a 120 year period for people to repent? - no one does - How long is Noah out preaching before he starts building the Ark? We don’t know - but we do know from Peter he was preaching righteousness.
2 Peter 2:5 ESV
if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;
The world is messed up and getting worse, in fact it gets as bad as it possibly can
Genesis 6:5 ESV
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
And it was so bad the Lord is sad about even the exist of humanity.
Genesis 6:7–8 ESV
So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
Who is this Noah guy? Gen 6.9
Genesis 6:9 ESV
These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.
Righteous - blameless in his generation - walked with God
This is very high Biblical praise for someone.
