MAIN IDEA: Four prayers that will strengthen my security in Jesus Christ
Lord Jesus, will you help me feel close to you?
Psalm 91:9–13 (ESV)
Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge—no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
Or, Lord Jesus, will you teach me what it feels like to be close to you?
Or, Lord Jesus, will you make yourself known to me?
Or, Lord Jesus, will you bring clarity to what’s next so I can be in your will?
You can buy a pop-up pod for $25 on amazon. Add it to your Christmas list. Put it in your bedroom with a camp chair. Use it as the place you meet with God. Read your Bible inside. Pray inside. Ask the Lord to help you feel close to him. Sit in the shadow and security of Jesus Christ. No technology allowed.
My personal practice ~ Most Fridays, I do not carry my cell phone. I believe my developed ability to turn off technology helps me hear the Holy Spirit’s guidance in my life. If you are serious or curious about staying in the shadow of Jesus Christ, you need to learn two disciplines. The discipline of silence and the discipline of regularly-scheduled technology breaks.
Let your parents use it when you have an outdoor sporting event and it’s raining.
Lord Jesus, will you give me strength to overcome the sin in my life?
Psalm 91:9–13 (ESV)
Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge—no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
Or, Lord Jesus, will you help me crave feeling close to you more than I crave my sin?
~ determine that nothing will remove you from the shadow of Jesus TODAY
~ turn your bedroom into a dwelling place for the Lord.
Lord Jesus, will you guard my eyes and cultivate my heart?
Psalm 91:9–13 (ESV)
Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge—no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
~ learn the discipline of making wise decisions with your eyes
A girl once described muscular boys as eye candy. Genesis 3:6, when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes…she took the fruit and ate it.”
~ ask a person in your church with gray hair to mentor you.
Normally, I would add that you need to trust one peer with your deepest secrets. But I was thinking about Titus 2 and what that could look like in a Christian school. Titus 2 says the older ones are supposed to mentor the younger ones.
~ Seniors mentor freshman. Juniors mentor 8th graders. Sophomores mentor seventh grade.
Lord Jesus, will you teach me to have victory in Jesus instead of being a victim of my circumstances?
Psalm 91:9–13 (ESV)
Because you have made the Lord your dwelling place—the Most High, who is my refuge—no evil shall be allowed to befall you, no plague come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.
On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread on the lion and the adder; the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
Write down Romans 8:37, “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
Write down Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Discussion questions:
In general, what do you think prevents students from experiencing the victory of Jesus in their life? What prevents you from experiencing the victory of Jesus in your life?
