Power, Faith, Grace, and Surprising Cost of Discipleship | Matthew 8:1-22 | Jose Brevil
Father, as we stay to your word now, may your word not return void and that your word do. Exactly what you have purpose for it to do. We love you. We praise you. We magnify and we glorify your name. Thank you for your grace this morning. Father. Would love you. Praise you, and we glorify your name in Jesus name, we pray amen, amen. Amen. Chapter 8. If you don't have a message notifications, your hand will get one to you. And any of you does not have a message note.
All right, so Matthew chapter 8, So, today, we're going to look at Power face Grace. And the surprising cost of discipleship. So first of all, I just studied the study, The Sermon on the Mount, the greatest sermon ever preached by Jesus, where Jesus taught us the principles of the kingdom and the sermon of the mount. Jesus told us how the kingdom of God is like, the way that we're supposed to live. Does the ideals for the kingdom telling us not to live in anger, telling us to be Salt and Light telling us to love our enemies, telling us to pray to fasten to live in such a way that honors and please God that we do not give God lip service but surely living for God that was The Sermon on the Mount. But in the beginning of Matthew from From chapter 124 War introduced to the person of Christ that's when were to the genealogies. We saw what? Cheese's came for. We saw Jesus, Temptation, and Jesus mission. And as we go flew The Sermon on the Mount and week we studied all his principles in the kingdom. And here we get to chapter 8, we going to learn about his power where Jesus is going to open ticket to show that say I am. When I say that I am and I'm not just want a teaching your principles, but I'm going to show you that the things that I say I can do them. And you can see even the baby agrees with me. See Dad would we will see here. Jesus Will authenticate his ministry showing us that I can do what I say that I can do just like, we just read. In the scripture. Here we saw that they say that Jesus taught as one who has the authority to hear in chapter 8. Jesus is going to show us that yes, indeed, he has authority. Jesus came on Earth is Miss Ministry, was threefold. Jesus had a Ministry of teaching, preaching and healing people. That's what we see in Matthew chapter 4. The end of chapter 14, verse 23. It says, and he went throughout all Galilee teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel. Is he teaching for claiming that means preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and what else was he doing? Safe with me. Hearing every disease and every Affliction among the people. So he's Fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those Afflicted with various diseases, and pains goes, oppressed by demons, that was having seizures and paralytic, and what did Jesus do? Jesus healed them an invoice 25, it says and good crowds. Followed him from Galileo to the decapolis and from Jerusalem to Judea and from Beyond the Jordan. So Jesus was interested in the whole person. Jesus was about teaching the gospel, breaking down, God's words, we understand it. You was about preaching. That means calling people to repentance a. You heard what God's word says? Now start doing it. Start putting your trust and faith in Jesus. And then lastly Jesus was in the business of meeting needs in this case here healing. And if you ever go to any Baptist Hospital, you will see this. They were right in there. Statement of a very clearly as you signing all your paperwork that they are continuing the ministry of Jesus of teaching, preaching and healing. And that's why the hospital system was started. It started by Christians because we believe in healing and that's why you have a whole hospital system. So Jesus is still in the business of healing people today, whether he gives us the intelligence to heal diseases for doctors or he kills us miraculously, and here, we going to see story here, where Jesus, going to heal several different people, he will heal a leper. He will. He listen to young, man? He really healed the Mother-in-law of Peter and also he Will heal a many people in the community where Peter's mother-in-law lived. And then the last thing we're going to look at today is that we will see the true cost of discipleship, meaning following Jesus. So, the first one leprosy leprosy is what is known today as Hansen's Disease. It's a very horrible disease where your skin is all messed up, where you lose sensation where it hurts and inform to that point. It was an incurable disease, and the only person we know recorded in Scripture. That was here was Miriam Moses sister. But here, Jesus is about to show them that there is no disease. That is beyond his authority, that is beyond his power. There is not a disease that he cannot heal us one. It says, when he came down from the mountain, great crowd, followed him and behold a leper came to him. And knelt before him saying Lord, if you will, you can make me clean that. That men believe in Jesus.
That's not a trick question. Do that men believe in Jesus? Yes, he came to him broke. All protocols, because the lepers were supposed to live on in an outside Camp away from people and if they were going to the street, there were supposed to be crying unclean, unclean unclean, so then you see people just wanting bush. Staying away from them because of belief was that if you come in contact with somebody with Leprosy, you might get it as well. But this man, so believe in Jesus, he broke or protocol, he knows that he get becomes to Jesus. Jesus will heal him. And he came to Jesus who says, Lord, if you will, you can make me clean. And look at Jesus Jesus, stretch out his head. And what did Jesus do? Jesus touch him. Remember, they were supposed to leave in a separate Camp, if they were coming on the street, they got to call on clean but everybody is running away from them. But what did Jesus do? Jesus came close. See, it doesn't matter what our condition is. It doesn't matter how messed up, it is ugly. It is two people, doesn't matter how scary can be two people, but to Jesus. Jesus, want us to come close and Jesus. Look at the man. And Jesus Jesus, and Jesus touch, the man, we need to stretch out his hand and touch him. Jesus says, I will and Jesus said, be clean and what happened? Immediately, he is leprosy, was clean. So Jesus here saying, hey, I said that I am the Son of God. I said I'm the son of man. I'm the son of David. Jesus says, I am God and Jesus says, I have taught you to principles in the kingdom and hear Jesus is saying, hey, I'm showing you also. I have power over disease and over every problem that you might face and Jesus said to him, see that you say nothing to anyone. Isn't that different from today? Jesus says, see that you told nothing to anyone. Jesus was not trying to build a crowd. Jesus was just trying to help somebody and Jesus told him, don't tell anyone. But Jesus says, go show yourself to the priest and offer the gift that Moses commanded for approve to them. Jesus still respected, the cultural norms, and Jesus, even use that as an opportunity to witness to the priests because what will happen to the priests. Now, when that man, go shows up to the temple, show to the priest. A, I used to have leprosy, but look at me now. There's no leprosy. See, that's another opportunity for the priests now to come to Jesus. But you see here, Jesus told him. Don't tell anybody. But what did the men do? He actually went and told everybody. But isn't that straggling strikingly different from why Jesus tell us to go and make disciples but instead we stay quiet, but Jesus told this man, stay quiet but the man could not stay quiet. He went and told people You see here, the leprosy, which was a horrible disease before, Jesus. It was that a big deal at all. If he Jesus healed one, who was ostracised in society, everybody wanted to stay away from this man because they were scared of this disease. But Jesus. Healed him because Jesus did not care where this one men came from what he faced, what disease that he had. But Jesus just wanted to heal him and the bottom line. Really the stories that Jesus is never afraid to get his hands dirty to do. What needs to be done for the well-being of others and the glory of God. Only one of you two received it. That's a place to say. Amen. Let me read it for you again, you can say it again, the bottom line is, Jesus is never afraid to get his hands dirty to do. What needs to be done for the well-being of others and the glory of God. That's when you say, Amen. With. All right. The Second Story receipt in the stacks, is the Centurion. Man. That Centurion was a Roman officer. Who commanded? A hundred men when we see in the scripture anytime they're talking about is Centurion. This is a man of high class in the society, but this man still cared for one of his servants, he came to Jesus and asking Jesus to heal his servant. Let's read in, verse 5 to 13. It says, when he had entered a New Ulm, a century came forward to him up. Healing to him. Lord. My servant is lying paralyzed at home suffering, terribly. And he said to him, I will come and heal him. I got a few got to pay attention to watch this, but the Centurion man replied. Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof but only what say the words and my servant will be here. Wow, what I hate this man have any wasn't Roman. He was not a Jew. He was not one of God's chosen. People was Jesus interested in healing his servant. See, Jesus is for everyone. The gospel is for everyone. Jesus did not only come to heal the Jewish people, but he came to save, and to heal anyone who would put faith in him and hear the man told Jesus. I am not worthy to have you come under my roof, but only say the word.
And my servant will be here. That's faithful. God is. True faith in Jesus. And verse 19 says for, I too, and a man, and a man under Authority, Were Soldiers under me, and I say to one go, and he goes to another, and he comes into my servant, do this. And he does. When Jesus heard this, he Marvel and said to do those with followed him. Truly, I tell you with no one in Israel, have I found such faith Wow. Why the compliment from Jesus? And he'll receive the importance of another for you to be in Authority. You also need to be on top or under our Authority and remember on Wednesday night as we studying about the fall, the world of, man and woman. You see it's not a problem for men to be the leader in his home. As long as he is under Authority under God Authority, then he will be a good leader and hear the listen to young men. He understands that this You had to be under Authority in order for you to have true or torti. And when Jesus look at that, man, Jesus would Marvel at his face. And Jesus said, I have not found any people in Israel with such face and the man was not a Jewish man, and then he says, invoice 11. I tell you, many will come from east and west and recline at the table of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the Kingdom of Heaven.
While the sons of the Kingdom will be thrown into the outer darkness. In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. So, pretty much in a nutshell for us today. Jesus is saying, hey, there are many people in the church. Well, they might be on their way going to hell. There will be people from the outside will put their faith and turn to Jesus and they will be sitting and having with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. So Jesus is saying, AA, when we come to church, don't you just give lip service but let us really have true face. Because Jesus is saying that might be hold for somebody outside with faith. Then somebody inside without faith, I didn't make it straight from the text, but look at verse 11 through 13 and to their Centurion. Jesus said, go let it be done for you. As you have believed that be cool for Jesus to tell that to you when you pray to something and and Jesus tell you realize let it be done for you as you have believed and we can smell the Centurion, man. Really believe that Jesus could only be caring for his servant, but he was also a humble man, a man with great faith. In Jesus power to do, what Jesus says that he can. And look at this. The servant was healed at the very moment. Is Jesus powerful. You bet he is, you see, healed, an outsider who was not a Jewish person because Jesus is for everyone, the bottom line is a relationship with Jesus has nothing to do with our religious background. Anyone stay with me. Anyone can come to Jesus, by faith. Anyone can come to Jesus by faith. Now, the third story of healing, is the healing of Peter's mother-in-law, and the people in the community. And when Jesus entered Peter's house, he saw his mother-in-law line sick with a fever that means Peter was married. So his mother-in-law Would lying sick with a fever and Jesus went on. Jesus touch her head and the fever did. What? Left her? And she Rose and began to do. I serve him. Isn't that a good posture to have after Jesus has healed, you, and then, you turn around and start serving. Morbid. But many times after Jesus has done something big for us to do some of us. Don't even remember what Jesus says done. We totally forget about Jesus. But here, the moment she got up, she went and started to serve them. And then that evening, they brought to him many we were oppressed by demons and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all wood were sick. Is it a power of Jesus word? He healed them by the power of his word and then verse 17, don't forget this. Now This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah. He took our illnesses and bore our diseases. Jesus healed was not just for the sake of just healing or just showing up, but Jesus was healing. Those people also to fulfill what prophecy because it was prophesied, that Jesus will do sign and wonders. And the Jewish people were looking for signing Jesus. Say here, I am showing you. I'm not only speaking a good a talk, but I have the power to heal and Jesus fulfilled prophecy here in verse 17 and he healed people from their diseases, bottom line. Jesus healed a woman in those days would typically was looked down upon in society. The Pharisees in particular, would pray everyday. I thank God that I met a woman. I think God I'm not a slave. That's how they viewed women in society. But we see hear Jesus does not care what our status is in society. A man with Leprosy. What did Jesus do he touched him and healed him a man who was not what you would call one of God's people, but Jesus brought him clothes and healed his servant and here when it comes also a woman would need me to get him and Jesus healed her and many others in her community. See Jesus is in the business of healing. Anyone who would come to him in space? Amen. Amen. Now, lastly got the cost of discipleship. The cost of discipleship, many of us would say that we want to come to Jesus, but never really take into account. What it takes to follow Jesus in both 18 and says, now when she's the sort of crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side and strut ascribe came to came up to him. And said teacher, I will follow you wherever you go, so he saying a Jesus. I want to be one of your disciples. I look at Jesus answers. Jesus says, Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the son of man has what nowhere to lay his head. So really do the delegate, you want to be your disciple. So this guy was really a wannabe disciples because we don't hear anything else from him. So maybe he just ran and just never came back. But Jesus is telling him you want to follow me. I don't have a place to lay my head, so really Jesus is speaking to those. People would just come to him for what he can do for them. As opposed to coming to him for him and Jesus. 1/8, if you just come in 2 Min, just for what you can get, Jesus saying, you coming to the one place. You see this guy, he was like he wanted to follow Jesus to be first. The coming to Christ for what Christ to do for him is the consumer mindset. I'm coming Jesus, I need a healing, Jesus, I need money. Jesus, I need a house. Jesus, say to the car Genesis, I need this, I need that, I need that, I did not need. Jesus said, if you just coming to me for that, Jesus is telling I'm just letting you know, that's not for you. That kingdom of God is not for you. You got it wrong. And then verse 21, another of the disciples that got was already a disciple said to him, Lord, let me first go and bury my father, Bury My Father, and Jesus said to him, follow me and leave the dead to bury their own dead here. When they, let me go bury my father first guess what? Father was not dead yet.
That's, that's delaying procrastination, you know, trying to find excuses for not following Jesus. Now, this man was trying to get security, so maybe he's waiting for his father to die for his dad, he will get it be inheritance and then he will go and follow. Jesus is telling him here, Jesus said to him, follow me, leave the dead to bury their own dead. That means leave the spiritually dead to bury the physical with those were physically dead. So Jesus here is telling me, I have your priorities in the right place, follow me, but this second guy says, I want to follow you. Jesus. But first See, he had his wrong priorities, and he just wanted to procrastinate, just like we do today. We will go on and do everything. But we rushing to work, when I get off work. We we trying to find something to eat, we get something to eat, we have some phone calls to make sure we have this and then we just go to bed. And then we went for the day, we never set aside time to pray. We never set aside time to read the Bible and we never set aside time to worship God. Sounds familiar.
We are no different than those two men's. A lot of us, just come to Jesus for what Jesus can do for us, but not coming to Jesus, for who he is and for what he has already done for us. And many of us, we put Jesus last on the list. While we say we've words that we want to put him first on the list. But Jesus here is telling us the bottom line is that we need to stop offering. Empty words to him and start to be, truly committed to him. We need to stop offering, empty words to Jesus, and to start to be, truly committed to him.
So, you have some lessons for today. So let's look at Five Lessons. We see in this text for today. The first lesson we see here, this taxes that we need to approach every situation with faith, we need to approach every situation with faith, trusting in God's ability to do what the impossible. Nothing is outside of his control stayed with me. We need to approach. God, that's right. Again, we need to approach every situation with faith, trusting in God's ability to do the impossible. Nothing is outside of his control. God is still in the healing business today. And if we struggle with some health issues, whatever it is, we need to go to God in faith, God will either healed us flu medicine or God can miraculously still heal us today. And if he's not going to heal, if you will give us a word just like he gave Paul the word. What did he say to? Paul my grace is sufficient for you? My power is manifested in weaknesses, we still need to go to God in prayer today for the things that we face in life today because God still works. And the second thing we see that God's grace is for everyone will put their trust in him. God grace is for everyone will put their trust in him. So don't look at anybody thinking that they are outside. They are too far off, but God can restore everyone. And anyone who would come and put their faith and their trust in him and the third thing, yes, Jesus still heal today. You're with me, but he chooses, how? And when, and we will never know unless we ask yes, Jesus still heal today but he chooses how? And when he is and we will never know unless we ask Midwest presort, Matthew 7, this ask and it will be given to you. So if Jesus says ask what is my job, I need to ask and live the rest to him, even if in your mind it seems like you don't even believe it. But train yourself to believe it to tell him. God, I need you. When he says, now to him, who is able to do far more abundantly above all? We Could ever ask or imagine. So, God is still in the business of healing today. God is still in the business of doing great things, in our lives, and the four for less than we see today. Is that true discipleship means leaving behind conferred and security be the first guy wanted Comfort, he wanted. Jesus, you wanted to come to Jesus for why Jesus could do for him. And the second I wanted security that he buried his father, get the inheritance Danny would follow Jesus. But Jesus says, it doesn't work like this. True discipleship means that we leave behind our comfort and our security and we turned to Jesus for who he is and Let Jesus Lead. And lastly, we need to prioritize God. Above our own comfort and commitments. We need to prioritize God's will above our comfort and commitments. See God want us to put him first, but often we put him last, and God is saying, a time to split the script. Put me first. So, really, the message in a nutshell, is Hebrews. 13:8, Jesus is the same yesterday today, and forever. Jesus will be the same. Same with me. Jesus is the same yesterday today, and forever. Jesus will be the same. Father thank you for your grace. Help us to remember the same power that Rose you from the grave lives in us and you are able to still working our lives today and Father help us to trust in your power to heal your power, to save your power, to provide your power to protect and your power to help us to walk the straight and narrow path.
And as we conclude today, I want you to think about this two questions, this some reflection questions, what seems impossible in your life today, what seems to be impossible in your life today? And can you trust Christ with it? Seems to be impossible in your life today.
Can you trust God with it?
Think about something in your life that seems impossible right now.
Why don't you go ahead and take some time now? And pray to God and Trust him with it.
father, we bring our and possibilities before you this morning, And we know that while we can't. but we know that you can, Jesus. Commended the Centurion man for his face. What will Jesus have to say about your faith? What will Jesus have to say about your faith? Will Jesus talk about your face like you talked about the Centurion, man? The father, we pray that you would increase our faith this morning. Are you willing to pay the price of discipleship? Me truly following Jesus, which requires sacrifice and commitment. Are you willing to give up some things for Jesus so that you can be truly committed to him? Are you willing to pay the price to truly follow him? And lastly, do you come to Jesus just because of what he can do for you. Or just because of who he is and what he has already done for you. Oh Father, you say to examine our hearts to see whether we are in the face. So father, we all come before you this morning. As we examine ourselves May we be found worthy, may we be found worthy of walking of the Gospel. To bother it. Is my our prayer. For each one of us here this morning that you help us. Oh God, that you help us to find favor in, you may relieve our comfort and security behind and truly following you. And father me, we trust you today. For the impossible. We love you, we praise you. We magnify And we glorify your name.
Indeed, Lord. we know there is none like you, none like you Is there a me and Cameron?
Lead us in worship. Now as we reflect on the message and prepare our hearts for communion, Baby reflect on God's word this morning as they sing this next song.
