Our Passage
Our Passage
14 And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute; when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons.”
16 Others, to test Him, were demanding of Him a sign from heaven. 17 But He knew their thoughts and said to them, “Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and a house divided against itself falls.
18 “If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. 19 “And if I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? So they will be your judges.
20 “But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are undisturbed.
22 “But when someone stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away from him all his armor on which he had relied and distributes his plunder. 23 “He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me, scatters.
24 “When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 “And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order.
26 “Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.” 27 While Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You and the breasts at which You nursed.”
28 But He said, “On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”
Anything in particular stand out to you in this passage? If so, why?
What amazed the crowds (v.14)?
The mute man who was demon possessed spoke after the demon went out.
What is the accusation that you see (v.15)?
He is casting out demons by Beelzebul, ruler of the demons
What did some demand of Him (v.16)?
Others wanted to test him and wanted a sign from heaven.
What does Jesus say about a divided kingdom (v.17)?
It is laid waste, it is divided against itself and itself falls
What is Jesus argument (vv.18-19)?
Satan divided against himself?
If I do it by Beelzebul, whom do your sons cast them out by?
If Jesus did it by finger of God what has happened then (v.20)?
The kingdom of God has come upon you.
Note: Just a few weeks ago He said the kingdom has come near. They preached the kingdom, now he is saying it has come upon you.
A strong man guards his house and possessions, it goes undisturbed (v.21).
What happens when a stronger one comes (v.22)?
Overpowers, takes away from him, all that he had relied on; then distributes his plunder
A very bold statement is made in (v.23); what is it?
Not with Me than against Me.
An unclean spirit goes out, looks for a new place, finds none, will return to home in which he came (v.24)
What does the Spirit find when he returns (v.25)?
It is swept and put in order
What is the state of the man when the spirit returns (v.26)?
Worse than first, for now there are seven other spirits more evil than the first.
What does the woman say with a loud voice (cry out, call out, proclaim) (v.27)?
Blessed is the womb and breast that bore and nursed you.
Jesus tells us who is blessed (v.28), who is it?
The hearers and doers of God’s word.
The Accusation
The Accusation
Jesus brings deliverance again, and that brings accusation that he is in league with Satan (also see Mt9:32-34, 12:22-37)
14 Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” 16 while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.
Instead of rejoicing, it brought about rebelling. Rebelling against God, God’s word’s and God’s Christ His work and His character.
There were exorcists in that day who sought to cast out demons, but the nuance is they needed the demon to reveal his name first. So, as not to do that the demon would make the person mute so could not speak the name.
Accusation continued with a demand for heavenly proof.
They wanted heavenly proof moreso than just earthly proof. . Does this sound familiar, tempting the Lord? Maybe in the wilderness by Satan?
The Refutation
The Refutation
Refutation: (N) the action of proving a statement or theory to be wrong or false (Oxford Dictionary)
17 But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.
19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.
21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; 22 but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil.
Jesus refutation came in three points
Accusation is illogical
Why would Satan cast out his demons, himself, why divide his own kingdom?
I think Jesus uses the refutation as a open call to “think.” He wants them to think about their statement.
Charges are self-incriminating
If Jesus was doing by power of Beelzebub (which means Lord of the flies by the way) by what power were they casting out demons? Was their power any different that Jesus? Is his work evil?
In reality the work that Jesus did proves that the kingdom of God was upon them, not the kingdom of the prince of this world.
Accusation was really an admission
Finally their accusation was really an admission of the power that Jesus had to cast out the demon.
He could not cast out the demon unless he was stronger than Satan (the strong man); Jesus came into the strong mans territory (the possessed man) and took away the power, strength of the strong man.
Jesus is setting the captive free (Col2:15; 1Jn3:8; Eph4:8, and Luk4:18).
Now Satan has been defeated (Col2:14; Heb2:14), it is a done deal, yet he is allowed limited power and limited authority for a time. Then will be removed (Rom16:20) and cast into lake of fire (Rev20:10)
May we remember that we are walking in victory not for victory, we are more than overcomers/conquerors (Rom8:37).
Application
Application
23 Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. 24 “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’
25 And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And the last state of that person is worse than the first.”
27 As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
There is no middle ground, no fence to sit on. Either you are with Him or you are against Him (v.23)
There is no neutrality when it comes to Jesus. There are two spiritual forces at work in this world, you come under the power, authority of one, and you get to choose, and no choice is a choice
The power of Satan who scatters and destroys, or the power of Jesus that gathers and builds.
Jesus illustrates the dangers of neutrality (vv.24-26) In telling the story a man’s body being the demon’s house.
When the demon departed, things were better for the man, he cleaned up and put things in order, but. . .
But he did not bring God into the house to fill the house. He remained neutral and the demon and seven others returned and it got worse for him.
You must choose, Choose Jesus, then you can sweep up, clean up, put your house in order and fill your house with more of Jesus, His Word, His way by His Spirit and you are protected from the wiles of the devil who looks whom he can devour.
“Taking sides with Jesus means much more than saying the right things.” (Wiersbe)
A woman said the right things, blessed is the womb. . . (v.27)
We can say we believe her to be sincere, but sincerity is not enough.
We take sides with Jesus when we hear His word and Obey it (consider Lk6:46-49, 8:19-21)
Why do you call me Lord and not do what I say?
My mother, my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.
Another great passage of scripture we are called to think about, think about our faith, our belief, our actions, to make adjustments if we need to.
