God provided a place in Goshen for Joseph and his family thrive during a famine. In Goshen, they experienced God’s provision, peace, power, protection, and proximity. God will do the same thing for us today. We just need to draw near to, dwell under, and depend upon God.

Goshen
Joseph brings his family to Egypt and settles them in Goshen
Genesis 46:31–34 NKJV
31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and to his father’s household, “I will go up and tell Pharaoh, and say to him, ‘My brothers and those of my father’s house, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me. 32 And the men are shepherds, for their occupation has been to feed livestock; and they have brought their flocks, their herds, and all that they have.’ 33 So it shall be, when Pharaoh calls you and says, ‘What is your occupation?’ 34 that you shall say, ‘Your servants’ occupation has been with livestock from our youth even till now, both we and also our fathers,’ that you may dwell in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.”
Goshen was a special place
It was in Egypt, but it was not a barren, desert place; it was a rich, fertile place.
EGYPT REPRESENTS THE WORLD
WE ARE IN THE WORLD BUT WE ARE NOT OF THE WORLD
GOD WILL PREPARE A PLACE FOR US
The Egyptians despised shepherds and sheep, but this was where the sheep were located.
THE WORLD DESPISES GOD AND GOD’S PEOPLE
WE ARE THE SHEEP OF HIS PASTURE
Goshen is a place of
God’s Divine Provision
God’s Divine Peace
Demonstration of God’s Divine Power
God’s Divine Protection
God’s Divine Proximity

MESSAGE

Provision
God provided a place where Israel could be sustained during the famine.
Genesis 45:11 NKJV
11 There I will provide for you, lest you and your household, and all that you have, come to poverty; for there are still five years of famine.” ’
God will provide for us today.
Philippians 4:19 NKJV
19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Matthew 6:33 NKJV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
Peace
Joseph knew that Goshen would be a place of peace.
God will provide a place of peace in the middle of chaos.
Power
Goshen was a place where God demonstrated His power.
Signs and wonders.
Aaron's staff becomes a serpent.
Swallows up the magicians staffs.
The first three plagues:
Water turned into blood.
Frogs
Gnats
God will give us a demonstration of His power.
Protection
Beginning with the 4th Plague, God makes a distinction between Egypt and Goshen
4th Plague (Flies)
Exodus 8:20–23 NKJV
20 And the Lord said to Moses, “Rise early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh as he comes out to the water. Then say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Let My people go, that they may serve Me. 21 Or else, if you will not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies on you and your servants, on your people and into your houses. The houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand. 22 And in that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, in order that you may know that I am the Lord in the midst of the land. 23 I will make a difference between My people and your people. Tomorrow this sign shall be.” ’ ”
5th Plague (Livestock Die)
Exodus 9:4 NKJV
4 And the Lord will make a difference between the livestock of Israel and the livestock of Egypt. So nothing shall die of all that belongs to the children of Israel.” ’ ”
6th Plague (Boils)
Exodus 9:11 NKJV
11 And the magicians could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians and on all the Egyptians.
7th Plague (Hail)
Exodus 9:23–26 NKJV
23 And Moses stretched out his rod toward heaven; and the Lord sent thunder and hail, and fire darted to the ground. And the Lord rained hail on the land of Egypt. 24 So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, so very heavy that there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation. 25 And the hail struck throughout the whole land of Egypt, all that was in the field, both man and beast; and the hail struck every herb of the field and broke every tree of the field. 26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel were, there was no hail.
8th Plague (Locusts)
Exodus 10:13–15 NKJV
13 So Moses stretched out his rod over the land of Egypt, and the Lord brought an east wind on the land all that day and all that night. When it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt and rested on all the territory of Egypt. They were very severe; previously there had been no such locusts as they, nor shall there be such after them. 15 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened; and they ate every herb of the land and all the fruit of the trees which the hail had left. So there remained nothing green on the trees or on the plants of the field throughout all the land of Egypt.
9th Plague (Darkness)
Exodus 10:21–23 NKJV
21 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, darkness which may even be felt.” 22 So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. 23 They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.
10th Plague (Death of Firstborn)
Exodus 12:29–30 NKJV
29 And it came to pass at midnight that the Lord struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of livestock. 30 So Pharaoh rose in the night, he, all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead.
Exodus 12:13 NKJV
13 Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
Proximity
Genesis 45:10 NKJV
10 You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near to me, you and your children, your children’s children, your flocks and your herds, and all that you have.
Goshen = “to draw near.”
The most important part of living in Goshen:
Was not the Provision, Peace, Power, or Protection.
It was the Proximity.
The most important part of our relationship with God:
Is not the Provision, Peace, Power, or Protection.
It is the Proximity to Him!
A lot of people want His hands, but they don’t want to see His face.
They want the blessing, but they don’t want the Blesser.
They want the healing, but they don’t want the Healer.
They want salvation, but they don’t want the transformation.
They want the mountains, but are not willing to walk through the valleys.

CLOSING

We need to focus on Proximity. How do we do that?
Draw Near
James 4:8 NKJV
8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Dwell Under
Psalm 91:1–7 NKJV
1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.” 3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. 4 He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. 5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day, 6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you.
Depend On
Psalm 121:1–8 NKJV
1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? 2 My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. 3 He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand. 6 The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. 8 The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.
