There’s Just Something about that Name.

God revealed Himself to us through His Son, And He revealed His Son to us through His word. We as followers of Christ, we need to see the life and ministry of Jesus so that we may follow His example and become disciple makers like Jesus was.
Intro: So far in the events of Jesus, we have seen Luke’s purpose in writing, and God became a human, and now we will look at event # 3 “The record of Jesus’s Ancestors.”
John did not write an earthly genealogy of Jesus, He wrote of His Spiritual genealogy going back to God the Father and the way back to eternity.
Matthew, writing to a Jewish audience, starts his genealogy of Jesus at David and Abraham to establish the Jewish roots of Jesus the Messiah. Jesus is also the fulfillment of the Covenants with Abraham and David which are two very important Covenants in the Old Testaments.
Luke, writing to more of a Greek audience, traces Jesus’s ancestry all the way back to Adam to Show that salvation is not for the Jews only but for all people.
Luke writes in a descending order from Jesus all the way back to Adam and then to God. Matthew writes in an ascending order from Abraham back to Jesus.
Genealogies are very important in the Bible. There are several genealogies in Genesis, the most dreaded is in 1 Chronicles 1-9. List after list of difficult names.
Jesus had to be from the royal line from the tribe of Judah, (Gen 49:10). He also had to be from the line of David, (2 Samuel7:16).
This kind of brings us back to the opening question, What is in a name?
For one thing, the religious leaders of Jesus’s day, knew of these lists of names. If Jesus did not come from the correct ancestral line, they would have dismissed Him as being the Messiah.
Most of the names in the Bible has a very significant meaning to them.
Jesus’s name, which is Greek for the Hebrew Joshua (Yehoshua)(Yeshua) meaning the Lord saves.
Jesus is a common name for Hispanic boys. They pronounce it (Hey suse) but it would be the same thing as naming a young man Joshua in English.
Another point is that these genealogies show the importance of studying the Bible as a whole. You need to read and study the Old Testament just like you do for the New Testament. You cannot disconnect the Old Testament from the New Testament.
It had been 400 years since the children of Israel had heard from God. They had been through the Babylonian captivity. Maybe they wondered about how Covenants of God would be fulfilled. They had not had a king for a very long time. Matthew and Luke have the answer to that question.
This is not a genealogy it the genealogy.

I. From Abraham to David. 1:1-6

Jesus is the fulfillment of the Abrahamic Covenant and the Davidic Covenant.
Matthew 1:1 NKJV
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:
In the beginning. Alludes to Genesis 1:1.
There are many genealogies in the Bible. John Phillips mentions there are 14 all together with Jesus’s being the final one.
Matthew’s introductory statements point immediately to Jesus as the subject of this book.(He is also the subject of the whole Bible, John 3:16), It also immediately indicates that Jesus is Jewish. Not only is Jesus Jewish, He is also from the tribe of Judah and the royal line of David.
Abraham, who is considered the father of the Jews. Abrahamic Covenant, Gen 12:1-3. Also, Abraham came from the line of Shem (Gen 11:10).
Abram=Exalted father.
Abraham=Father of a multitude.
The royal line comes through Judah and then through David. (2 Sam 7:16). God continued the covenant to Solomon but the main line through Solomon, did not keep their end of the Covenant. God, however keep His end. Talk more about that in a little bit.
Matthew 1:2 NKJV
2 Abraham begot Isaac, Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot Judah and his brothers.
Abraham: Gen 11:26-25:11.
Isaac: Genesis 21:1-35:29.
The story of Jacob continues to Gen 49:33.
We also know that Jacob means supplanter or deceiver, and that his name was later changes to Israel. Which means wrestled with God (Gen 32:24-32.
Jacob became the father of the 12 tribes.
Matthew 1:3 NKJV
3 Judah begot Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez begot Hezron, and Hezron begot Ram.
Jacob had 12 sons. 5 of those were with his first wife Leah. Judah was not the first born. He was fourth.
It is interesting there are some very famous names not in the line of Jesus. Moses is a big one. Moses was from the tribe of Levi which is the priestly line. (Mary does have some connection to the tribe of Levi since she is a cousin or relative to Elizabeth).
Jesus was not from the Line of Joseph. Joseph was not named as one of the tribes but Jacob blessed him and gave him a double portion and Joseph’s two son became part of the 12 tribes, Ephraim and Mannaseh.
Women in the line of Jesus. Not common in ancient genealogies.
Tamar. Gen 38.
Judah’s line to Jesus continues through Perez.
Matthew 1:4 NKJV
4 Ram begot Amminadab, Amminadab begot Nahshon, and Nahshon begot Salmon.
The story of Ruth who was a Moabite.
Matthew 1:5 NKJV
5 Salmon begot Boaz by Rahab, Boaz begot Obed by Ruth, Obed begot Jesse,
Jesse was the father of David.
Matthew 1:6 NKJV
6 and Jesse begot David the king. David the king begot Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah.
Even though David had greatly sinned by taking Bathsheba for his wife, God still chose a child from that relationship to be the heir to the throne and to be in the line of Jesus.

II. From David to the Captivity. 1:7-11.

Matthew 1:7 NKJV
7 Solomon begot Rehoboam, Rehoboam begot Abijah, and Abijah begot Asa.
The Kingdom split under Solomon’s son Rehoboam. 10 tribes suceded from the union so to speak. The tribes of Judah and Benjamin became the nation of Judah while the other 10 tribes became known as Israel or Ephraim.
Just for reference, there are no lost tribes. See the story of Anna, who was from the tribe of Asher. Luke 2:36.
Matthew 1:8 NKJV
8 Asa begot Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat begot Joram, and Joram begot Uzziah.
Matthew 1:9 NKJV
9 Uzziah begot Jotham, Jotham begot Ahaz, and Ahaz begot Hezekiah.
Matthew 1:10 NKJV
10 Hezekiah begot Manasseh, Manasseh begot Amon, and Amon begot Josiah.
Matthew 1:11 NKJV
11 Josiah begot Jeconiah and his brothers about the time they were carried away to Babylon.

III. From the Captivity to the birth of Jesus. 1:12-16.

Matthew 1:12 NKJV
12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jeconiah begot Shealtiel, and Shealtiel begot Zerubbabel.
Matthew 1:13 NKJV
13 Zerubbabel begot Abiud, Abiud begot Eliakim, and Eliakim begot Azor.
Matthew 1:14 NKJV
14 Azor begot Zadok, Zadok begot Achim, and Achim begot Eliud.
Matthew 1:15 NKJV
15 Eliud begot Eleazar, Eleazar begot Matthan, and Matthan begot Jacob.
Matthew 1:16 NKJV
16 And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.
Jesus was not the biological Son of Joseph. Jesus was the seed of woman a reference to Genesis 3:15.
Matthew 1:17 NKJV
17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.
