Bible Passage: Jn 1:1–5
Summary: This passage reveals the profound truth of the incarnation: that the Word, who was with God and was God, became flesh and dwelt among us. It signifies that God chooses to engage with humanity directly, bringing hope and purpose into a disordered world.
Application: This sermon can guide Christians to recognize that in times of chaos and uncertainty, they can turn to Jesus as the tangible expression of God's hope and presence. He steps into our struggles, offering reassurance that we are not alone.
Teaching: The teaching centers on the idea that Christ's incarnation signifies God’s commitment to humanity, demonstrating His desire to bring light and hope into our darkest experiences.
How this passage could point to Christ: In the context of the entire Bible, Jesus embodies God's ultimate revelation to humanity, merging the divine and human natures, which fulfills God’s promises to be with His people throughout history.
Big Idea: The presence of the incarnate Word in our lives assures us that we can find hope and purpose, even amidst the chaos and darkness that surrounds us.
Recommended Study: In your study with Logos, it would be beneficial to delve into the historical context of John's prologue, particularly how it contrasts with other ancient philosophies about the divine. You might also look at relevant Greek word studies for 'light' and 'darkness' to enhance your understanding of their significance in John's Gospel, as well as examining the implications of the word 'became flesh' in various theological commentaries.
1. Eternal Word, Unchanging Hope
1. Eternal Word, Unchanging Hope
Jn 1:1
You could start by exploring how the eternal nature of the Word reflects God's unchanging faithfulness amidst our shifting circumstances. Emphasize how this truth provides stability and hope, outweighing the chaos in our lives. Highlight Christ’s divinity as foundational to our faith and assurance.
About a year or so ago I was bored one evening and pulled out a puzzle we had gotten for the kids. It wasn’t a difficult one. Probably 200 pieces or fewer. Nancy joined me and then we went on a bit of a puzzle kick. She went to Goodwill and bought a few. The problem with Goodwill puzzles is that they don’t always have all the pieces. Now we could decide not to do the puzzle or go for it. What we found was that despite missing a few pieces, the completed image still depicted a beautiful scene. Our lives might sometimes feel like those missing pieces, but the picture of hope in God remains whole and intact. This light-hearted analogy highlights that despite life's missing pieces, God completes the picture for us.

2. Creative Christ, Renewed Creation
Jn 1:2-3
Perhaps highlight the creative power of the Word in the beginning—all things being made through Him and nothing existing without Him. Invite the congregation to consider the implications of Jesus as the source of all life, finding new creation hope in Him when faced with personal voids.
3. Life and Light, Overcoming Darkness
3. Life and Light, Overcoming Darkness
Jn 1:4-5
Maybe share how the life brought by the Word becomes the light for all humanity, shining in darkness. Encourage believers that amidst darkness and despair, Christ's light overcomes. Affirm this as a source of hope and transformation for personal struggles, urging them to let His light fill their lives.
