1 John 2:15–18 ESV
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.

The World or the Lord

1 John 2:15 ESV
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
you cant love both
you have to make a choice
agape - a discerning love involving one’s entire being - the heart, soul, and mind.
your morality, faith and will
your personality, as God made you
intellect rational thought
Love the world or the things of the world
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
1 John 5:4–5 ESV
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
The difference - God so loved the world - that whosever speaks of people all people in the world
overcoming the world speaks of overcoming the world system and sin
loving the world and the things in it also speaks of the world system and the sinful things in it.
Also the love is different God had compassion upon the people of the world and sent his Son so they might have eternal life
Loving the things of the world is a selfish love
The world and God stand in opposition to one another
If you love the world with all you are you cannot love God
If love God with all you are you cant love the world

The Sins of the world

1 John 2:16 ESV
For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.
Desires of the flesh - physical pleasures sex food - comes from within
Desires of the eyes - tv commercials who look at this comes from without
pride of life - arrogant assumption when we think higher of ourselves then we ought - keeping up with the Jones's
Are these things inherently bad
Food is necessary for life
Sex is necessary for new life
Nice things last longer clean things are healthier
pride itself is not bad we are proud of our children ourselves when we do good
The issue is when we are overcome by these desires. we must discipline ourselves
desires - part of our love
do we love these things or are they simply things

Seek the better things

1 John 2:17 ESV
And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
The world is passing away with all its desires
But God is forever
