Text: Gen. 13:10-13.
Intro: Last week we looked at Sodom and Gomorrah and we started to see how it contrasts the city of refuge, Hebron. Tonight, I would like us to consider the physical, and geographical picture that the Lord gives us in Genesis 18 to that which He reveals to as the literal, and spiritual place in Luke 16.
The picture of Hell, judgment and eternal fire:
Deuteronomy 29:23 KJV 1900
And that the whole land thereof is brimstone, and salt, and burning, that it is not sown, nor beareth, nor any grass groweth therein, like the overthrow of Sodom, and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the Lord overthrew in his anger, and in his wrath:
Jeremiah 50:40 “As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah And the neighbour cities thereof, saith the Lord; So shall no man abide there, Neither shall any son of man dwell therein.”
Luke 17:29 KJV 1900
But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
Jude 7 KJV 1900
Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them, in like manner giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.
The cave:
Genesis 23:19–20 KJV 1900
And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan. And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Heth.
Last week we discussed through the many times a cave is mentioned, there is only one time a cave is used as a burial place outside of the cave in Genesis that Abraham purchased from the sons of Heth. We find that in John.
John 11:38 KJV 1900
Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.
Read: Luke 16:19-31.
Genesis 18:33 KJV 1900
And the Lord went his way, as soon as he had left communing with Abraham: and Abraham returned unto his place.
Read: Genesis 19:27-29.
Ephesians 4:8–10 KJV 1900
Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
John 8:56 KJV 1900
Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
