Welcome back
Would you consider yourself law abiding
Do you know how many traffic laws are in Florida?
Me either - I looked it up and it was hundreds of pages
But would you agree laws are important?
Quick history lesson
During 400 years between Malachi - birth of Jesus - Religious sects formed
The most influential - Pharisees
They were strong for oral and written tradition
Believed - obedience to Law would usher in Messiah
Fence laws - rules and regulations to help people obey the law - over 1000 -ex. Sabbath - 39 categories of things you can’t do
Jesus appeared to be a threat -healing on the Sabbath - not making ceremonial cleansing
Jesus clearly answers their concerns
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
4 things:
Jesus does not abolish the law, He fulfills it
17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.
Jesus would not only keep the law - explain and show it’s original intention
his creation be characterized by both internal (attitudes) and external (actions) obedience and holiness.
The Law would remain
18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
Amen - truly - pay attention
We do not change His word
35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.
God’s Law will guide our life and teaching
19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
More than lip service
Inward change and outward response
15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
The Law reveals we need Grace
20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
This was shocking
Pharisee’s focused on outward not inward
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
Our obedience to God’s commandments comes as a natural outgrowth of our endless love and gratitude for the goodness of God.

No such thing as NT Christian
We need all of it
2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV)
15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
Next week we see how Jesus starts showing the intent of the Law
“You have heard it said...”
Read Matthew 5: 21-26
