Proverbs 16:1–33 NASB 2020
The plans of the heart belong to a person, But the answer of the tongue is from the Lord. All the ways of a person are clean in his own sight, But the Lord examines the motives. Commit your works to the Lord, And your plans will be established. The Lord has made everything for its own purpose, Even the wicked for the day of evil. Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; Be assured, he will not go unpunished. By mercy and truth atonement is made for wrongdoing, And by the fear of the Lord one keeps away from evil. When a person’s ways are pleasing to the Lord, He causes even his enemies to make peace with him. Better is a little with righteousness Than great income with injustice. The mind of a person plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps. A divine verdict is on the lips of the king; His mouth should not err in judgment. A just balance and scales belong to the Lord; All the weights of the bag are His concern. It is an abomination for kings to commit wicked acts, Because a throne is established on righteousness. Righteous lips are the delight of kings, And one who speaks right is loved. The fury of a king is like messengers of death; But a wise person will appease it. In the light of a king’s face is life, And his favor is like a cloud with the spring rain. How much better it is to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen above silver. The highway of the upright is to turn away from evil; One who watches his way protects his life. Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before stumbling. It is better to be humble in spirit with the needy Than to divide the spoils with the proud. One who pays attention to the word will find good, And blessed is one who trusts in the Lord. The wise in heart will be called understanding, And sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness. Understanding is a fountain of life to those who have it, But the discipline of fools is foolishness. The heart of the wise instructs his mouth And adds persuasiveness to his lips. Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. There is a way which seems right to a person, But its end is the way of death. A worker’s appetite works for him, For his hunger urges him on. A worthless person digs up evil, While his words are like scorching fire. A perverse person spreads strife, And a slanderer separates close friends. A person of violence entices his neighbor And leads him in a way that is not good. He who winks his eyes does so to devise perverse things; He who compresses his lips brings evil to pass. A gray head is a crown of glory; It is found in the way of righteousness. One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And one who rules his spirit, than one who captures a city. The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the Lord.

Have You Received God's Love For You?
Revelation From God
Author
The Author of Proverbs for the most part is King Solomon, however Agur (Prov 30:1), and Lemuel (Prov 31:1) who are unknown outside the book of Proverbs, 1 wrote two of the proverbs.
1 John D. Barry et al., Faithlife Study Bible (Bellingham, WA: Lexham Press, 2012, 2016).
Date
The true date of all the Proverbs are unknown but we do know that they where written during the reign of Solomon, 971-931 BCE., but after his prayer for wisdom, 1 Kings 3:1-28.
History
Historically the Proverbs would parallel Solomon’s reign, except for Prov 30 and Prov 31, in which we know nothing about their historical back ground or context.
Structure
Although the sayings in Proverbs may seem like a random assortment, the collection is actually a curated, unified literary work. The text includes seven distinct groups of proverbs, some of which are attributed to different authors and exhibit two styles of writing. Notably, the first collection’s long discourses on wisdom (Prov 1:1–9:18) contrast with the other six collections’ much shorter sayings (Prov 10:1–31:31). Multiple topics are scattered across these collections. Advice regarding subjects such as laziness (Prov 6:6–11; 10:4; 24:30–34; 26:13), sexual immorality (Prov 5:1–23; 23:26–28; 29:3), humility (Prov 11:2; 25:6–7; 29:23), and friendship (Prov 13:20; 22:24–25; 27:17) can be found throughout the book.

A proverb in Hebrew is
ma^sha^l
maw-shawl'
Apparently from H4910 in some original sense of superiority in mental action; properly a pithy maxim, usually of a metaphorical nature; hence a simile (as an adage, poem, discourse): - byword, like, parable, proverb.

Exegesis / Hermeneutical
Salvation in Christ Jesus our Lord, Prov 16:1-33 :
Commit Yourself unto the Lord Prov 16:1-3 :   Love. Love, Love, the start of this Proverb, the first pericope that is thee verses long points the church to the the First 3 Elements of YHWH, and that fact that we must commit ourselves (Believe Act_16:31) then we must serve God, listen and obey God in order to receive our full inheritance. Belief alone gets you salvation Joh_3:16-18, Joh_3:36, but obeying God in love Joh_14:15 gets you to walk in your faith to your full inheritance, 1Pe_1:4-8, 2Pe_1:4-8, Heb_5:11-14, Rev_20:1-6. As Dietrich Bonhoffer would say, do not allow yourself to get sucked into cheap grace, salvation has a cost, both for God and for us the believer, that is why Christ tells us that if we want to be His Disciple we must deny ourselves and pick up our cross and follow him, Mar_8:34. Meaning the cost for us is to be selfless servants of God, we must walk in our faith daily, Jas_2:14-26. 2) Loving kindness and Truth Prov 16:4-9 : Notice how this pericope is 6 verses long and directs Man, the church to Christ Jesus not only in the fact that it is six verses long but also in the words used by the Holy Spirit in this Pericope. Notice the last line, "The Lord Direct his Steps." Who is the "his" that the Lord is directing? The man that seeks lovingkindness and truth. (Jesus Christ) is LovingKindenss which is Mercy or Khane in Hebrew, Mercy is Jesus Christ dying on the Cross for Your Sin, it is clemency for all that have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God Rom_3:23; for we know that the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord Rom_6:23. Jesus Christ the Word of God, Joh_1:1-5 is truth Joh_17:17!!! So those that seek lovingkindness and truth find salvation through Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior!!! Joh_3:16-18, Joh_3:36!!! 3)He who speaks right is Loved Prov 16:10-14 , This is God telling us that when we claim to love Him that we can not give Him lip services our action must exemplify our words, our deeds must back up our talk. We can not say I love You Lord and then continue to walk the ways of the world. Joh_14:15, Jas_2:14-26, 1Jn_4:19-21!!! 4) Wisdom and Understand lead to a New Beginning Prov 16:15-22 , Notice how this pericope is 8 verse long and drives the church to understand that a new beginning starts when we seek Wisdom and understanding that is Christ Jesus, Col_2:1-7. That we will discard the old and put on new self, Eph_4:17-32, Col_3:1-17!!! 5) Look to the Lord not the World Prov 16:23-25 :
Next we are directed in these three verses to look to the Lord and not the ways of man, the ways of man lead to death but the ways of the Lord leads to life, Psa_25:4-5, Psa_86:11, Psa_118:8-9, Mat_7:7-8, Rom_8:1-15 2Co_4:18!!! 6) Repent and Be Saved Prov 16:26-33 : I love how this Proverbs ends with the last pericope being 8 verses long and directed all to a new life in Christ, for what good is a salvation story without one of the most important elements, repentance. This pericope closes by telling all that we must receive God's Love for us Joh_14:1-14, 1Jn_4:8, 1Jn_4:18, 1Jn_4:19, by repenting of our sins 1Jn_1:9, and sharing God's Love with all Mat_22:39, 1Jn_4:20-21!!!
