(1) Jesus is the Promised Savior

The Promised King After David
Matthew 13- Jesus begins teaching on the Kingdom of Heaven. His parables point to a kingdom that is fruitful, joyful, valuable, and grand. A kingdom much greater than the kingdom of Israel during its prime under David and Solomon.
Matthew 21- The triumphal entry- He rides in on a donkey, they proclaim him as the “Son of David”, and they are crying for them to save them.
Matthew 26:6-13- Jesus is anointed “prepared for his burial”.
Matthew 27- He is crowned with thorns, called “the King of the Jews”, declared as the “Son of God”.
Matthew 28:18 “And Jesus approached and spoke to them, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
The Promised Prophet After Moses
Matthew 2:13-23- The flight and return from Egypt to Israel- “Out of Egypt I called my son” (Hosea 11:1 “When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.”)
The Sermon on the Mount- They are at a mountain, Jesus gives covenant language, followed by a further explanation of the law, much like Moses after receiving the 10 commandments followed by a further instruction of the law.
Matthew 8:23-27- Jesus calms the storms and waves, pointing us back to Moses whose miracle at the Red Sea confirmed his leadership of the Exodus.
Matthew 14:13-21- Jesus feeds the 5000 families, and has 12 baskets of leftovers, symbolizing God providing enough manna for the 12 tribes of Israel and enough for them to gather for the Sabbath.
Matthew 17:1-13- The Transfiguration
The Better Israel
Matthew 4:1-11- Israel failed in their temptation in the wilderness, but Jesus remained faithful and fasted.
Matthew 10:1-15- Jesus calls 12 apostles, complimentary to the 12 tribes of Israel, who would be the leaders of a new chosen nation and royal priesthood (the Church), redeemed by Christ.
Matthew 21:12-17- Jesus enters into the temple to cleanse it (this is the first time “the glory of God” entered into the temple since it left. It did not enter into the temple Zerubabel built).

(2) Living/Witnessing

(1) This instills confidence in us that Jesus was who he said he was.
(2) We can boldly with the gospel, because we have been commissioned by the King to take it to the ends of the world.
(3) When we are discipling others, we can show them these connections to help them gain a better understanding of who Jesus is.
