Introduction

I don’t know if professional youth football coaching is a thing, but if it is then I may have logged enough hours to be one. But my season ended this past weekend…
We told them all the cliche things that coaches tell players… Things I’m sure y’all have been hearing all week! But these things are true, y’all are at the win or go home part of your season so y’all need to be dialed in and leaving it all out there. Give your full effort, don’t hold anything back. If your season ends Friday night, you don’t want it to be because of an effort issue!
I tell my boys often with all the sports, and school, and everything they do, to give an effort that honors the Lord. Whatever they are doing, to do it as if they were doing it for God.
That’s something I get from the book of Colossians…
Colossians 3:22–24 ESV
Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not by way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
Some of you may be wondering why you should play in a way that honors the Lord. Play for yourself, your family, your team, your coaches, sure. But why play for the Lord?
You should play for Him because of what He has done for you, the life He lived and death He died and resurrection He rose for you! So you could be saved!
Gospel explanation and invitation
Guys go out there tomorrow night and play like you won’t get to play again if you lose, cause…
More than that, go out there and play with an effort that is worthy of the God who has given you the opportunity and ability to play this game. Give it all you’ve got, every bit.
