Each evening they come back, howling like dogs and prowling about the city. They wander about for food and growl if they do not get their fill. But I will sing of your strength; I will sing aloud of your steadfast love in the morning. For you have been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. O my Strength, I will sing praises to you, for you, O God, are my fortress, the God who shows me steadfast love.

May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you! May those who love your salvation say evermore, “God is great!” But I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay!

As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him. And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Jesus Calls Matthew
Jesus Calls Matthew
As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed him.
He passes Levi, sitting in the tax “booth”
Matthew means “Gift of God”
Collecting taxes along the “international highway” between Syria and Egypt
Matthew takes no credit for himself
Luke provides more information...
And leaving everything, he rose and followed him.
Jesus works in the heart of an individual
He calls them to follow Him and to His service - “follow me”
To following Christ is sacrificial service
knowing that difficulties and persecution lay ahead
Died to self, lived for Christ
Great Feast
Great Feast
And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples.
The house [living quarters] provided for the tax collectors
Jesus spent time there and the tax collectors and sinners gathered
And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them.
Meal [Feast] - well prepared and greatly enjoyed
Meal implies friendship and fellowship
Jesus identifies with the tax collectors and sinners
Pharisees question the Disciples
Pharisees question the Disciples
And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?”
They critisize the disciples for accepting Jesus as their teacher
In their legalistic views the Pharasees fail to understand that there are occasions when such fellowship is entirely proper and justified
But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”
The doctor who, without becoming contaminated with the diseases of his patients, must get close to them in order that he may heal them.
Jesus says “go learn what this means...”
For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
The people had disobeyed God, and through the hardess of their hearts, their sacrifices amounted to sheer mockery
“I desire mercy, and not sacrifice”
“For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners” [to repenance] Luke 5:39
