Death is like a vast ocean stretching beyond our sight. From this shore, we watch those we love embark upon the waters and disappear into the horizon. But while we see them leaving, there is another shore—a shore where, on the other side, they are arriving. Death is not the end; it is simply a passage. And today, we gather on this shore to say goodbye, even as we cling to the hope of reunion on that distant shore.
Today, we stand in the heavy shadow of sorrow, grieving the departure of someone deeply cherished—a mother, a grandmother, a friend, a faithful servant of Christ. In this moment, we’re drawn together by the love and memories that Carolyn leaves behind. We weep together in this shared loss, but we do not grieve without hope. Because we know, as Carolyn knew, that there is a light that pierces even the darkest sorrow: the promise of eternal life for those who place their trust in Christ.
For those of us who knew Carolyn, there are memories—precious, shining moments—that rise up like stars against this night of grief. These memories are gifts she leaves behind, lighting our way forward. Today, let us hold fast to them. These moments, these pieces of her, will carry us through the days ahead and remind us of the joy she brought to our lives.
In times like this, when words fall short, we turn to the one source of true comfort: God’s Word. Carolyn herself knew well the promises of Scripture. I believe she would echo the Apostle Paul’s words to Timothy: “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” Carolyn was a fighter—a woman of strength, independence, and resilience. Yet her strength wasn’t her own; it came from a deep well of faith, drawn from Christ. Her life testified to this, not just in her words but in her actions.
When we spoke, our conversations would eventually drift to the things closest to her heart: her family, her faith, her church. Her life was centered on the cross of Jesus Christ, anchored firmly in her love for God and her faith in His promises. This faith sustained her through trials and storms, giving her hope and something to rejoice in. Carolyn knew that this life, with all its hardships and blessings, was just a prelude—a passage to something far greater, a life in the presence of her Savior.
As Carolyn approached her final days, she stood on the shore of this life with her gaze fixed on the life beyond. She had confidence, a calm assurance, that over that horizon waited her Savior, Jesus Christ. I saw it in her—this peace, this quiet joy that came from knowing where she was headed, knowing that love, boundless and eternal, awaited her. And though we mourn, we can be comforted in knowing that she has finally found rest, embraced in the arms of her Lord.
Her love was profound, but it was not confined. She loved her family dearly, yes, but she extended that love to her neighbors, her friends, anyone in need. Her grandchildren, especially, knew this love, and they loved her back. I was told that if you asked her who she loved most, her answer was simple: it was always the one who needed it most in that moment. Such a love is a reflection of God’s love—a sacrificial love, a love that seeks out the weary and the burdened, offering comfort and strength.
Today, as we gather to remember her, our hearts are heavy. Grief is the price we pay for love, and while the world may not understand, we know that our grief is love with no place to go. But Carolyn’s love remains with us. In time, our tears of sadness will turn to tears of gratitude, and we will smile as we remember her kindness, her strength, and her faith.
Jesus promised, “In my Father’s house are many mansions…I go to prepare a place for you.” Imagine, if you will, the moment Carolyn took her first breath in Heaven. Her eyes opened to see the Lord Himself, waiting to welcome her home. There, she is enveloped in a love beyond our understanding—a love that forgives, that heals, that fills every longing of the soul. She has found peace that we cannot yet know, but one day, we too may experience if we hold to the same hope she did.
We live in a world touched by death, but for those who believe in Christ, death is not the end—it is the doorway to life everlasting. Carolyn believed this, and now she is experiencing it firsthand. In the words of John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Because of this promise, we can have peace even now, knowing she has stepped into the life that God has prepared for her.
Today, as we bid farewell to Carolyn, let us remember her life, her legacy, her love. Let her memory inspire us to reflect on our own lives and our own faith. If you were to leave this world today, would you be ready? Carolyn knew where she was going; she knew that beyond death lies an eternity with Christ. She invites each of us to consider our own hearts and lives, to seek the love that has conquered even death.
So let us celebrate her life, honor her memory, and carry her love with us. This is not goodbye; it is simply “until we meet again.” Carolyn has merely crossed to the other shore, and one day, we too will stand on that shore, reunited with those we love, forever in the presence of the One who loves us beyond measure.
Her life here has ended, but her true life has only just begun.
