Big Idea: The Kingdom is hidden from the proud and shown to the humble.

Jesus is thankful for the hidden and the revealed
He chooses who will receive the revelation
We ought to be thankful for his revelation
There are some things that are clear when you think about them simply, and more confusing when explained by an expert.
Farmers come up with solutions that engineers would mock. Yet they work
Learning and becoming an expert is good, but sometimes the most educated can make things more difficult. They can miss the forest for the trees.
God’s Kingdom has been revealed to people who have simple faith, and are hidden from those considered wise.
Luke 10:17–24 ESV
The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name!” And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” In that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

Context:
Just before this, Jesus had received the reports from the 72, who were so excited about what had happened on their evangelistic trip.
But Jesus told them that the power of God that they had experienced should not be their main source of rejoicing, but rather something very basic, or fundamental: Luke10.20
Luke 10:20 ESV
Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
Now Jesus rejoices that these things (The kingdom, knowing the gospel) are hidden from the wise and understanding, but revealed to little children
Job 37:24 ESV
Therefore men fear him; he does not regard any who are wise in their own conceit.”
There were many people who knew their bible inside and out, yet did not perceive that Jesus was the Blessed One, the Messiah.
2 Corinthians 3:14 ESV
But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away.
1 Corinthians 1:18–27 ESV
For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.” Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong;
This doesn’t mean a smart person cannot have faith.
But those who build up a lot of knowledge or wisdom often do so with great pride in self
It takes a humble person to come to faith.
These things are only revealed to those that God chooses who will this gospel will be revealed to
Luke 10:22 ESV
All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”
Jesus makes the Father known John1.18
John 1:18 ESV
No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
Luke, Vol. 1—That You May Know the Truth (Praise for Revelation Through Himself)
Jesus is the sovereign dispenser of the knowledge of God the Father to “those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” No one will see who God or Jesus is unless he reveals him. So when unbelievers tell us they cannot see the beauty of the gospel, we are not surprised. The Word of God radiates light, but it cannot be seen unless a person’s eye is opened by God.
John 1:18 ESV
No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
The faith to believe is a gift, and no one comes to the Jesus unless they are drawn to him by the Father. So this is a work of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. The Father draws (through the Spirit and the Word), Jesus reveals the Father. Salvation is of God, a Trinitarian God. The Father, Son and Spirit work in perfect harmony to save those he elected to salvation.
John 6:44–46 ESV
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. It is written in the Prophets, ‘And they will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me— not that anyone has seen the Father except he who is from God; he has seen the Father.
Now Jesus encourages the disciples to take stock of their unique view of the Kingdom work of Christ:
Luke 10:23–24 ESV
Then turning to the disciples he said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”

Parallel Passage: Matthew13.16-17
Matthew 13:16–17 ESV
But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. For truly, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.
John Courson:

Have you ever wished you lived in the days of Moses—when you could see the Red Sea parting, the Egyptians drowning, the shekinah glory glowing? Have you ever wished you could live in the days of Elijah when fire came down from the sky and he rode a chariot into heaven? Jesus says, in effect, they wish they were us because we understand what they could only wonder about. They could only guess at the meaning of what they wrote, but we see the full picture because we see Jesus, and in Him everything comes together, everything makes sense.

Not only did prophets and kings and righteous people long to see this, but even the angels long to look at it:
1 Peter 1:10–12 ESV
Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
We have the benefit of the Prophets and Apostles, who teach us through the written word. And what they wrote about they did not fully understand. But now, those in Christ, who have access to this Word, can have this experience. Yet even then, we do not yet fully comprehend. The glories to await cannot be comprehended by our minds until that day.
1 Corinthians 2:6–16 ESV
Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ.
